Topic: Loosen afro curls? Posted: Jul 26 2011 at 1:50am |
Hey, I was just wondering if it was possible to get your afro from something like:

(That's not me, btw, I just chose the picture because he has similar texture and length)
to something with a wavier texture like:

or

What technique? And is it do-able at home or would you recommend I go to a salon?

There's no way to get your desired texture with what you have unless you do twistouts or something. Don't try to alter it chemically, that will not give you the look you're going for.

The only thing I can suggest is curl enhancing products to make your curls pop as much as possible. There is a significant difference in how my hair looks when it's dry and i have no clumping and when my curls are defined with the help of product. Your hair may not look exactly like your desired texture but you can at least try to make the curls more visible. Maybe someone else can chime in with actual suggestions for what products will help with that. I plan on trying some things from the Shea Moisture line myself.

@mangachan Thanks, I've heard that some chemical applications do work, so I'll just look a bit further in that, but thanks for the advice.
@Afrobuttafly I think I will try some moisturizing product or curl enhancers first to see how they look. I've been looking on YouTube and a lot of people have been using texturizers to achieve that desired texture, so I'm considering that too. But I'll definitely give the curl enhancers a try,

Word of caution about texturizers (and this goes into my first post) make sure you have some...any curl/coil definition at all before you do a texturizer. Texturizers do NOT "make" your hair curlier, it will stretch out and loosen the existing curl pattern(if there is one). If you never have curls or coils you will not get the intended results with a texturizer. The curl enhancing products afrobuttafly suggested will define curls if you do have them.

That's what I thought texturizers purpose are for? I agree with doing twist-outs to get the curl pattern going......I feel like it encourages your hair to do the same! For me its about avoiding the chemicals!?

PP you got me rollin at work. OP as your hair gets longer and whatnot and you keep it stretched your curls may change a little. But the question is why do you want your hair to change? If you expected something else when you went natural then its matter of accepting what you have. My sis had this problem now she loves her lil fro.
