    Posted: Nov 06 2012 at 12:55pm

Hi everybody, my name is Victoria. I'm new to this site so please bare with me. I've recently decided to go natural and I'm currently wearing a u-part wig as a protective style while transitioning. I plan on doing a long transition of 1.5 to 2 years until I let my natural hair out. I thought u-parts were a great idea until I realized that my natural hair is starting to grow out and my leave out doesn't look right and I definitively don't want to use heat on it. I have about 2.5 inches of undergrowth. I thought about using a closure but there is no way I could get it to look right plus I would have to restart my u-part.  I use flexi rods with my leave out but the my relaxed hair and natural hair have 2 different curl patterns and the curls at my roots are different from the curls from my ends . I knew that after a few months I wouldn't be able to handle trying to make the 2 different textures look right. One day I was browsing on YouTube and came across this video review of a lace front wig applied by using the elastic band method and gel:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AjYXL1BoBA&list=FL-aEdt6J73ced9fSpokH13A&feature=mh_lolz - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AjYXL1BoBA&list=FL-aEdt6J73ced9fSpokH13A&feature=mh_lolz I was AMAZED by how real it looked and the best this is: no glue (no damage while I'm growing out my hair) and no leave out but I would still choose to wear a tiny bit behind my hairline and have a very small amount of my edges out. So this is where I need your help. I have about a million questions about lace fronts and desperately need to get answers from women that are familiar with them.

  • What is the best lace front company? (Are rpgshows's lace front wigs any good? If so which one is the best?)
  • What does "bleaching the knots mean" and what benefits do you get from it?
  • How long would a lace front last?  How long can I wear it everyday without the lace tearing?(Mind you I'm not using any glue)
  • How do I maintain my wig?
  • Would I tear the lace if I sew on an elastic band?
  • What do I do with my hair underneath?
  • Do I have to take it of every night or can I keep it on for a  few days or week before having to "glue" down the hairline of the wig with gel again? (just like in the video)
  • Do you have any tips or additional advice on wearing lace fronts
  • Do you have any precautions about wearing lace fronts?
  • Do you think wearing a lace front is a good transitioning hairstyle?
  • Do you know any youtubers or blogs that can help me out?

I really appreciate your help and thank-you in advance for your wonderful advice.Heart

Okay!

Lots of questions so let me help you out when I can.

There are lots of lace wig companies out there & to say one company is better than the other could be difficult. But for your first couple of orders you might want to order with a company like RPG as there are a lot of reviews out there about this company. In time you may feel more comfortable ordering  from some of the names you pick up with on the board.

Bleached knots are the knots on the lace wigs which will 'effectively' disappear when bleached, so the wigs look more natural. Ask your vendor to do this. If they don't you could try faux bleaching with sally hanson spray (do a search) until you feel comfortable bleaching your own knots.

Got 2 units to switch it up - they should be the same if your trying to pass the unit off as your own. How long they will last will depend on how you treat them.

Check the newbie threads for maintenance or do a post on what type of hair you are thinking of buying as different hair texture/types requires different maintenance .

Place some of the cut off lace under the band and sew gently & you should not tear the lace.

If you are natural I suggest cornrows and a wig cap under your wig.

If you are using got2beglued or some type of non glue method then yes you will have to take off or it will naturally come off and you will reapply every few days.

As you will have access to your natural hair then yes, it is a good transitioning style as you can moisturize you natural hair regularly.
