how many artists in this era of leaks and downloads reach those numbers?

But see, that's part of the point I'm trying to make. If you love this artist so much, why aren't you buying her music instead of stealing it.

I think the latest person to sell a million in a week was Taylor Swift, and Lil Wayne did back in 08.

Label buying your album =/= selling a million records

This.

A million records nowadays is REALLY hard to do in one week without a little "help" from the label. I think hitting 100,000 in a week sans label help is more feasible, assuming that you coordinate a mass simultaneous international release. And are we talking physical sales or digital - or combined?

I'm talking physical. And it doesn't seem hard for Taylor Swift, as hard as these little yt girls go for her. Ya'll really believe her label "helps" her, or are the numbers pretty accurate.

country music generally sells very well. i buy about 98% of my music so i can't answer for ya..the 2% is remixes and stuff i can't purchase and Chris Brown's music bc I hate him but I enjoy his song occasionally

This I know from working in the industry. Often labels will buy 100K albums to boost initial sales so the artist at least makes gold in their first day/week. Those bought albums are then deducted from additional REAL sales the artist makes moving forward under the guise of "marketing campaign".

ETA: this is basically an industry standard. Top tier artists (i.e. Bey, Taylor, Linken Park types) may have more than just 100K purchased. There's no real money in album sales anyway for an artist, so that's all for PR purposes.

I understand the numbers and whatnot. The thing I'm trying to understand is why so many of her stans who go so hard for her aren't buying her music to put her over the top?

I think she's trying to say that buying her music alone won't put her over the top.

Unknown lol.

But there's no money in being a straight up "artist" anyway as recording contracts are designed for the label & other behind the scenes people to walk away with the biggest chunk while artists are lucky to get $0.07 per physical album sold if you're a big name, $0.03 for smaller artists and even less when it comes to digital downloads (iTunes) and streaming music licensing fees (i.e. Pandora, Spotify etc).

So it's irrelevant. They ARE however, buying tickets to her concerts, wearing House of Derreon (sp), and jumping on any bandwagon product she promotes. All of the above are where her money really comes from. So, in the end, they are supporting her lifestyle.

ETA:

Not to hijack the thread, but this is also why any artist who wants to actually earn a living is also hawking any product they can possibly get to give them an endorsement. NONE of that money is touched by the label unless someone is unfortunate enough to sign a 360 deal. Confused
