Jones, 
I remember being at my cousin's bday party. 
My grandma turned on the news and Ray Nagin said "i cant call a mandatory evacuation but if you love your family please leave now"

my mom, my brothers and i drove back to our house to start packing 
i figured we were going on vacation so i packed a bathing suit, underwear, 3 pairs of shorts and some tanks. 

the next morning our whole family drove to Peachtree City and stayed with my aunt. (it was 17 of us in her house) 
the next day everything was fine and then the levees broke. 

i just remember bursting into tears. 
my mom brought us to the MLK museum, we registered for school out there 2 days later 
we couldnt get in touch with my uncle(he stayed and helped ppl evacuate from the east) 
it was just a depressing time. 

 

we wound up getting a 2 bedroom apartment (it was hell) 
standing in line for fema money, fighting with the insurance companies for our homes in NO. 
they told so many people that we had "storm insurance but not flood insurance" Sleepy

taking hand me down clothes, not knowing anyone 

man one thing about katrina was that she humbled me. 
to lose everything and have to start from scratch is a humbling experience 

that's why i have no problem giving anything because i know what it feels like to lose everything

the nytimes featured my uncle in a story 
he was the one that tied the doors together to use as "floaties"

also, my school told it's students that in the event of a an evacuation, buses were available for students who could not get home.
Where were those buses in August 2005? No where to be found.
By the time we were told to leave (They waited until the PWI made their announcement), the city was blocked off from incoming traffic and my mom couldn't come get me. Freshman weren't allowed to have cars, so luckily I was able to catch a ride with my older cousin. I have classmates who couldn't get their flights out and ended up stuck on the roof until they could be lifted away.

I went back as soon as my school reopened and graduated in 2009.
I go back occasionally but i would never live there again

no my mom's side stayed in ATL 
my dad's side is still there. 

my half sister had to get evacuated from the superdome and they took her all the way to new hampshire 
she stayed there for a minute and now she's back in NO 

i dont think i could ever live there again
it's not the same and there is really no opportunity

Wow Sunshine.
I can't believe it was that long ago.
We were in school and the teachers turned on the tvs.
It was surreal couldn't imagine being near the whole thing an losing it all so fast.

girl i was 2 or 3 days into my freshman year of highschool 
my brothers were sophomores and juniors 

i just remember telling my best friend "girl we're going on a hurrication. i'll see you next week" 

we both wound up in ATL but it was more like a month or two before we saw one another again 

some good things came out of Katrina tho 

networking in ATL is extremely good! 
man i have so many connects 
black ppl in atl stick together (IMO)

Off topic, but this reminds me, if you live in an area of the country that ever floods, please know that home insurance does not cover floods. we had to learn that the hard way with the hurricane that came right after katrina and that was an hour away from New Orleans
