How do you feel when you hear people say that N.O. residents had plenty of time to evacuate and they knew the hurricane was coming. I always give a side eye. Of course I've only heard white people say this.

Did they really have enough time? If Im being told to leave, I'm leaving. Im packing up as much as I can take with me and staying with relatives elsewhere.

i don't have time for people who weren't in New Orleans at the time but still feel the need to speak about Katrina.
regardless of whether we knew a hurricane was coming, NO ONE knew the levees were going to break and that's all that matters.

I think whoever thought it was a good idea to build a city in a bowl is kinda dense.

I don't think anything of it, because I don't know how much time they actually had.
But I know it's hard for people to pack up and leave your physical life just like that, not knowing if things would still be there when you return. I wonder about where those people who had to relocate are now, and if their lives have stabilized, and how they feel about everything. I also think about the people who lost their lives. It's really sad.

most the people who didnt evacuate didnt have enough money to do so.
evacuating is expensive!

and we had so many false alarms that people didnt take it seriously
i cant tell you how many times they had mandatory evacuations and not even the power went out

I packed a weekend's worth of clothes. We all thought the storm would pass through, mess some things up, flood a few streets, and we'd be back in our rainboots going to class the next week.
same way i'd done for the hurricane that passed it's little self through 2 months before
