If we're gonna go that route, I'd say more like African Haitian American, though? Motherland first, than specific country of ancestry, then current nationality

Honestly, for the man on the corner, AAs might as well be white. Hell, even Haitians raised abroad are considered blanc when they go home. We're considered foreigners

To be precise, they will know a black person when they see one but because of the westernized mannerisms, they'll call you blanc. It's not meant to be literal.

She said Caribbeans are proud of their bodies... is she aware that MANY African American women are too?
I get her point of view, she was trying to say that since her ancestors are from the Caribbean she is NOT African American because her ancestors were not born here (and by ancestors she meant the ones from hundreds of years ago) but at the same time she tried to say that her black people are better than the black people here.

i dont think the Belizean was being extra or wanted to offend anyone.

when i was in europe this guy asked me where i was from and i said america and he so no your not american youre  from afrique.  i smiled and took it. hell i was proud.  no ones ever said that to me before.

i would have been annoyed that he had the nerve to ask me then correct me as if he knew me. Also, he probably has the idea that "only whites can be american".<----- I hate that sht Sleepy

What's funny about that, though, is that he wasn't trying to compliment you. Lots of Europeans (especially France) think of AAs in more flattering terms than Africans or West Indians. That is definitely the case in France. By telling you that no you're from Afrique, he was actually trying to knock you down a peg.
The French think of AA's as westernized blacks, as more white than black, actually.

girl i get it but you cant knock me by calling me african...ever

I've also an American reporter call Naomi Campbell African American, which was really bizarre as well

...and this is why I (and the Belizean guy probably) go out of our way to correct people about our cultural identity. White people like to generalize the black race as some monolithic community. As though we speak the same languages, eat the same foods, and have the same culture because we are black. When its them though, they love to highlight the differences.   Its insulting. You can't determine who I am by just looking at me.
