....I think the peoples of the americas tend to be especially proud of their ancestry and countries of origin and dont like being "lumped" so to speak...i guess that's where the Belizean was coming from....even Cubans make the distinction, yes?

i think MzCailiky's reaction had a lot to do with her experience in Belize but everyone seems to be ignoring that part of her argument
Go figure when I went to Belize they talked that "people from the states think they have a monopoly on being Americans" Make up your mind.

| The connotation of being an African American changed after the Civil Rights movement. If being an AA only entailed being a black person of African descent in the Americas, everyone from Haiti to Long Island would fall under the belt. But it's understood by many that African Americans are those who are the descendants of North American slaves. It shouldn't be, but that's the perception. And the people in Belize griping about the North American monopoly were most likely referring to North Americans thinking America=solely North America while forgetting that there are many other countries in the Americas.

I guess people would rather be referred to by their heritage instead of their nationality.

Yet my first reflex is to call myself Haitian. Can't logically explain why, but I don't usually identify as Canadian at all. I tend to say that I'm Haitian born in Canada, lol. When you think about it, I'm omitting Guadeloupe altogether and I don't directly refer to my Canadian nationality. But I know Im black and that I'm a descendant of slaves.

I know for sure if i was in T&T for example, got mistaken for Trinidadian, and i had the opportunity to say Im not, i would.... so it doesnt matter if its US, Europe, etc...i dont want to be mistaken for what im not.... i dont think the Belizean was being extra or wanted to offend anyone.
