what? There were no Blacks here. Natives, and I'm sure many dark-skinned (tainos, ciboney,  mayans, etc), but not peoples of African ancestry

from what I understood black folks were superior navigators and had traveled the planet before white folks came out the caves.  But hey...*shrugs*

....^^@ Derri and Newdiva...whites were murdering off entire societies of people in the countries they took over though...i doubt very much any significant number of original blacks, so to speak, were left, to continue their lineage. I'm willing to wager all later generations of blacks were slave descendants, and not whatever smatterings of blacks may have been there before the whites arrived.

We're talking before they dusted the dried blood off
themselves and came out those caves girl. We had already explored the world by the time they were thinking about learning to count.

Yup such as in the area now known as Florida there was a settlement of Africans prior to slavery.

Okay I get it but really you had to raise your hand? Ninja you been here since you were five. Then he kept asking why I wouldn't speak when I saw him. Raising your hand to correct somebody was going too far in the middle of class. The speaker gave him a blank stare and moved on just like the rest of the white people. Once you are here you are an African American. Go figure when I went to Belize they talked that "people from the states think they have a monopoly on being Americans" Make up your mind.

Well if the speaker referred to a Swedish-American as Italian-American would it be wrong for the person to correct him? I really don't see the difference. The fact that we share the same race does not make us the same. Me correcting someone because they inaccurately describe my cultural identity isn't a slam on everyone else from that race.

The bottom line is the term African-American assumes that your ancestors were slaves and that a significant portion of your lineage is rooted in the United States. This doesn't apply to most blacks in the world, so naturally many of them reject it.

I will say this though, I know that Africans aren't all kumbaya with each other JUST because we're all black.
In my perfect world my African-African brothers and sisters wash my back and lick my wounds of slavery with me, but it's not always the reality.

We're just kids of slaves holding onto what we have left of our ancient (important and necessary) identity.
