Jay-Z’s mom comes out as lesbian on new ‘4:44’ song

There was a lot to unpack on Jay-Z’s new album “4:44,” which debuted Friday on Tidal, the rapper’s artist-owned music streaming platform. Soon after the quasi-surprise album dropped, fans and critics began picking apart the lyrics on its 10 tracks, and they were not disappointed. Though only 35 minutes long, the album addresses everything from the rumors he cheated on wife and music megastar Beyoncé to the elevator incident with Solange to his getting called out by Kanye West.

But one of the most personal revelations in the album appeared in the third track, “Smile,” in which Jay-Z’s mother, Gloria Carter, comes out publicly as lesbian.

“Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian/Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian,” rapped Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter. “Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate/Society shame and the pain was too much to take.”

Later in the track, which also samples Stevie Wonder’s “Love’s in Need of Love Today,” the 47-year-old rapper revealed his mother had found love again — and that he supported her completely, despite what anyone else might think or say.

“Cried tears of joy when you fell in love/Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her,” Jay-Z rapped. “I just wanna see you smile through all the hate/Marie Antoinette, baby, let ’em eat cake.”

Gloria Carter herself delivers one of the most emotionally resonant parts of the song toward the end of the track, a spoken-word outro about her journey to self-acceptance:

Living in the shadows. Can you imagine what kind of life it is to live? In the shadows people see you as happy and free. Because that’s what you want them to see. Living two lives, happy but not free.

You live in the shadows for fear of someone hurting your family or the person you love. The world is changing and they say it’s time to be free.

But you live with the fear of just being me. Living in the shadows feels like the safe place to be. No harm for them. No harm for me.

But life is short, and it’s time to be free. Love who you love, because life isn’t guaranteed.

Smile.

In an exclusive interview with iHeartRadio, Jay-Z explained the song “Smile” as “just what it is.”

“There are gonna be bad times, and those bad times can do two things: They can get you in a place where you’re stuck in a rut, or it can make your future that much better because you’ve experienced these things,” he told the music site.

The song lyrics represent the first time either Jay-Z or his mother had publicly discussed her sexual orientation, according to HuffPost. But Jay-Z has long been a champion for LGBT equality, the news site pointed out.

“I’ve always thought [now allowing same-sex marriage] as something that was still, um, holding the country back,” Jay-Z told CNN in 2012, in an interview about the rapper’s support of then-President Barack Obama. “What people do in their own homes is their business, and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. [It] is no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination, plain and simple.”

The heartfelt song was met with respect and praise from Jay-Z fans and LGBT groups

I just said that she was shielded by her famous son from the cruel spotlight, but was not living in the closet.

Nothing shady at all in my post or the deleted post. May God continue to bless her for what she does for others and for the people in the community where she lives and the community where she owns a business. She's a good person that deserves respect and deserves to be shielded from the cruel media spotlight.

Think I may buy his album when the price goes down  . I wonder how many childen Beyonce lost stillborn.Cry

Throughout the album, which dropped on Tidal on Thursday night, Jay-Z addresses his apology and guilt. Its middle track, “4:44,” is the most explicitly apologetic:

The song starts with a reference to the couple’s latest big news, the birth of their twins, as well as the way his daughter Blue Ivy has helped him see the error of his ways:

“Look, I apologize/ Often womanize/ Took for my child to be born to see through a woman’s eyes/ Took for these natural twins to believe in miracles.”

He goes on to address personal moments in his relationship, including Beyonce’s miscarriages, which she also referenced in her song “Sorry” (“my children both living and dead”). He raps:

“I wasn’t ready so I apologize . . . I apologize for all the stillborns/ Cause I wasn’t present your body wouldn’t accept it . . . I apologize because at your best you are love and because I fall short of what I say I’m all about.”

The song ends where it started, with a reference to his children and the risk he took with his decisions.

“And if my children knew, I don’t know what I would do/ You did what with who?/ What good is a ménage à trois when you have a soulmate/ You risked that for Blue?”

In a breakdown of his album on iHeartRadio, Jay-Z shared that he wrote the title track of his album when he woke up in the middle of the night. “. . . I woke up, literally, at 4:44 in the morning, 4:44 A.M., to write this song,” he said. “So it became the title of the album and everything. It’s the title track because it’s such a powerful song, and I just believe one of the best songs I’ve ever written.”

Though “4:44” exclusively focuses on his apology, Jay-Z also references his cheating in other songs on the album, including “Kill Jay Z,” the album’s first track, which references the infamous 2014 moment when his sister-in-law, Solange, was seen on tape hitting him in an elevator (a moment Beyoncé has also explicitly referenced in her own work).

“You egged Solange on/ Knowing all you had to do is say you was wrong.” He also goes on to reference Halle Berry’s ex-husband Eric Benét, who famously cheated on her in the early 2000s: “You almost went Eric Benét/ Let the baddest girl in the world get away.”

After he dissed Elder Harry Belafonte, he lost all of my respect on a profound level and his household will not get a penny from me. He apologized when he was pressured to, but my view is that when you said it, you meant it, especially when he made the diss permanent by putting it into a song.
Fk Jay.
