What is Kanyes appeal.
Is it the Hov factor?
Lately his verses have sucked but but but I've never thought of Kanye as a good lyricist anyway.
When he had Lupe on his Touch the Sky vid I was surprised.
Bc Lupe was miles and miles better than him.
For me it's because Kanye is a damn good composer. Whether it be writing hooks and bridges or his use of samples, choir vocals, and vocalist, and drums used, his layers of sounds work well together. Ever since the Roc La Famila Album he's been consistent with very awesome beats and song compositions.
Add his humor, oddball arrogant yet insecure personality, and guest appearances, and his albums have all been really good, even if he was an average lyricist. His topics, especially in the first two albums were fun to listen to also.
I don't think it was Jay that helped Kanye get hot. Jay didn't even want Kanye to rap. While Bleek was one summer away for 8 summers, Kanye was building his brand hooking up with Common, Mos Def, Rhyme-fest, and Kweli and other "backpackers." If anything, they helped with his appeal more than Jay.
