I think a lot of it is unnecessary jealousy and a feeling that you have to compete with people at all times - even when no one else knows about the competition but you.

I don't think most cattiness comes from a fear of man stealing.

No and men are really no different in this area.  We just get called out for it and they don't.  Being a fly on the wall in their world is some funny sh*t.  I be like damn y'all some gossiping ass little girls!!

Lack of self value, insecurity...

   Even when my self esteem was the lowest as a teen I still didn't get fighting over a dude...I guess I can thank my parents for that...

   I remember when a girl and her mom came up to the school to fight some chick over a boy...then it all made sense...
