Hmm. It's been 4 months. My front still reaches my lip and my back is still near my armpit. From Nov 17 to Feb 23. I just did my hair and I had a lot of breakage. I need to do some protein treatments. My front should be down to my chin by now.

Months later and my hair is still the same length aka 6 inches. Whomp!
I spritz my hair everyday and seal with usually coconut oil.
I wash my hair with kinky curly shampoo sometimes. I use WEN as a conditioner and a deep conditioner. I trim my ends when I see split ends/fairy knots.
My hair hates baggying and shea butter. It's breaking and dry.
Should I do more moisture or protein? I'm starting to believe that this is just my terminal length. |
My hair is now 9". So in 8 months, my hair has grown 3inches. I think my hair grows .5 inches a months, but I retained only 3.

If your hair grows .5 inches per month, in it 8 months you should have retained 4 inches. So...you're not doing too badly but could be doing better.
My hair is fine (the actual hairs aren't thick/fat...which means not too many cuticle layers). Because I have fewer cuticle layers it doesn't take that many acts of damage to destroy a strand enough for it to break off. Maybe your hair is like mine?
I absolutely have to wear something on my head at night. The friction from one night can cause breakage and after a month I can have a rubbed out spot. I have to be SUPER gentle when I comb. I have to be very careful not to over stretch my hair when wet because doing that a few times will cause breakage (that's also why I use coconut oil, to combat hygral fatigue). I also can't be constantly in my head combing, detangling, moisturizing...all that needs to be done like once a week...certainly not everyday.
For me technique is more important than products. But, for my hair it's important to avoid products that are made with ingredients that are meant to stick to the hair (silicones, polyquats, etc.). Those things build up too easily for me and require strong shampoos to remove which over time degrades my strands. I think that's why I'm partial to Aubrey Organics because they don't have all those ingredients.

I have really fine strands, I had and still have this problem. I would suggest doing mini braids and mini twists as a protective style. I only started doing it, but after a month when I took it down I feel my hair got longer. Maybe I am imagining. But in minibraids, its easier to moisturize and do all your hair needs, especially taking care of your ends. My BHM sisters said I should cut out the shampoo so I did(their other ways to clean scalp). You may also be low porosity. You need something to open the cuticle to get moisture in. HTH!!

I wear mini twists now.I redo them every month. I use bentonite clayonce a month. The breakage did start around the time I started using shampoo, so I'll stop. I put mt in my hair, do we'll see about the breakage.

While in twists, I do roll tuck and pins everyday. I don't let my hair touch my collar

mini twists are my GOAT look. i think they have helped a great deal with length retention.
i am now going to start leaving my rinse-out conditioner in....via the tightly curly method to see if that makes a difference. i only use silicone free conditioners though so i have to find one that is all natural and heavy enough to stay in my hair....sheamoisture dt masque is a NO GO. lol way too heavy for that level of leave in.
have you tried the whole non-rinsing conditioner approach?
