I went in to my stylist today to get a relaxer after I was 12 1/2 weeks post relaxer. So as my stylist is going through my hair she says your hair smells like castor oil, did u use it. I told her yes. She's like oh no u shouldnt have. I was like why. Here's what she said

Castor oil has salt in it and it makes your hair break.
When castor oil is in your hair and you are getting a relaxer the relaxer wont penetrate and it will leave your hair underprocessed.

I was like what the hell. Is this for real. Please can someone clear this up for me. I have been using castor oil since i joined this forum and I like it. Is there any truth to what she said. Now I am confused.

TIA

This is what my grandmother says to me also.  There is castor oil out there which is pure which is perfectly safe to use on your hair.  I know there is castor oil with salt in it, which will definetly cut out your hair.  What brand of castor oil are you using, and what does the ingredients say?

The one that I use is Olde Jamaica Castor oil. The ingredients say Castor oil USP, unrefined castor oil.

If I were you I wouldn't have the castor oil in my hair the same day I have relaxing done...

Concerning breaking... I don't know, so far castor oil moisturize my hair better than moisturizers I have been using.

I think if you're using pure 100% castor oil then its fine for your hair.  Claudie would probably know best about this though.

About 5-7 days before a relaxer I wash my hair and I don't use ANY products on my newgrowth (other than a glycerin mix) until AFTER the relaxer.  I have coarse 4b hair and relaxers seem to take better if I don't have a lot of buildup on it.

100 % pure castor oil should be safe.

Some manufacturers do put salt in their formulations.  I know that the Jamaican Black Castor Oil is safe, and most drug store brands, also from the various sites on the internet. If the ingredients on the label, states 100% castor oil, then it is okay. I agree with Blumac, about prepping the hair for a relaxer.  It will penetrate better, if you do not have a build-up on the new growth.
