Everyone's growth rate is different from one another. 5 inches a year is awesome, the average is 6inches unless you are doing extra things like taking biotin or if you are pregnant your hair grows a lot too. Sew-ins and wigs are not your only alternative, you can also us braids or vn tree braids which you could make look just like a sew-in.

Does biotin really increase an individual's hair growth rate?

I feel like sew ins put a lot of stress on the hair. I just took mine out and I only had it in 4 weeks. Just couldn't take it any more.
I think you're leaving them in too long and seriously, putting another one in the next day? Don't you miss your scalp being able to breathe?? I leave my sew ins out for at least 3 weeks.
But while I have sew ins in, I use an applicator tip bottle to put 1:1 vegetable glycerin and water on my braids, and then seal it with sweet almond oil and JBCO every three days. When I take out the weave, my hair is moisturized and doesn't feel like its prone to breakage at all.
After, I detangle in sections with aloe vera juice with a denman brush. The aloe vera juice works wonders with detangling. I feel like when I used to lose a lot of hair after sew ins, it was because I was too lazy to detangle after AND I wasn't moisturizing the braids properly while it was in so I was breaking off dry hair and losing any retention.
Hope that helps. Oh, and I have 3b/3c/4a hair. It's also fine.

Also, you should switch to wigs if your edges are destroyed. Don't destroy them more! I'm definitely switching over because I had a lot of shedding and thin edges a few months after my son was born. It SUCKED. As far as perming, wouldn't it be pointless to perm your hair after it has all grown out??
I think your hair may be breaking off in sew ins if it has been permed, especially if you're not moisturizing the braids well enough.

I agree with others. A wig is always going to be better as long as
you're not trying to glue/tape on your edges. Consider a topical growth
aid as well. Preferably something with sulfur in it - and do it
consistently.

I think your hair is growing, you probably are experiencing breakage when you take your hair out. If you stick with sew-ins or even do wigs, make sure you moisturize you braided hair underneath. I try to spray my braids with a light leav-in everyother day, and oil my scalp periodically. If you don''t take care of your hair under neath, whichever way you go, braids, weave, wigs, etc. it'll just be brittle and break off as soon as you touch it.
