when i was younger my mother always used the garlic hot oil treatment by isoplus i think, but for the past 5 years i've been using Hask's aromatherapy hot oil treatment. it works good and stimulate's the scalp.
 
the ingredients are: I add almond oil and castor oil as well
Aloe Vera Extract, Acetamide/Lactamide MEA, PPG-2 Isodeceth-12, Polyquaternium-10, Quaternium-80, Dimethicone Copolyol, Orange Extract, Orange Oil, Lime Extract, Lavender Extract, Oak Moss, Galbanum, Camphor, Rosemary Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Basil Oil, Cedarwood Oil, Thyme Oil, Lemon Oil, Quaternium-15, FD&C Yellow #5, D&C Orange #4

you don't need to buy anything special - you can try Olive oiland jojoba oil for hot oil treatments.

I haven't used one is so long I should be ashamed. I am pretty sure it can be done weekly though. I am ashamed. I think I will go and make myself one right now with some EVOO and some other kinds of oils.

I use it as often as I use clarifying shampoo.  Once a month.

Weekly is good. If you are using all natural oils, you can give yourself a hot oil treatment as much as you like. It definitely won't hurt your hair.
