Without any heat involved and have it look nice.
I've tried:
Twisting after washing my hair, then using a plastic afro pick once it's dried. I spray a little moisturizer on and fluff with fingers.
My hair typically comes out looking odd shaped. I'm not expecting a perfect sphere lol but I have to "tuck in" lots of hairs that stick out.
And some parts of my hair feel clumped together and kind of hard. Not soft at all.
Does anyone have a good method of picking out an afro? I'm starting to think it's impossible for me lol

I only do it once every few months because the process is becoming harder than it was when my hair was much shorter.

I use my modified denman brush, SheaMoisture DTM and oil. I only use the denman because the teeth are small enough to get rid of all of my coils. If you don't have a lot of coils, I think you can use a comb/brush with less teeth.

I DC my hair and then put it in 4 puffs with pony tail holders. If it is long enough, you could also band each section to stretch it out.

When it is almost mostly dried, I take 1 of the 4 sectioned pieces and take a small piece from that section. I put a little SM on it and smooth it through (Don't use much or the hair will revert back). Then a little oil.

Brush from the ends and move up to the roots. The piece of hair should be soft and fluffy and not damp. Once you finish, just pin it down and do your entire head.

Just like with an afro puff, sometimes you have to shape certain areas with your hands by fluffing/picking/patting/packing to get the shape you want. It takes some practice but I'm sure you'll get it. If all else fails, slap your afro in a puff.

HTH!

Here's my technique:

--I wash and DC my hair and then extra moisturize and seal.
--Then I either braid or band it into 8-10 sections and let it dry.
--I start from the back and take down one section at a time.
--I finger detangle each section and then I use my pick to pick out each section (one at a time)

This is my end result:

No heat!Smile
From there, you can pat it into any shape you want or rock it w/a headband.
HTH!
