You made a good point; lack of communication causes that. In the guy's mind, he is single. In the girl's mind, they are in a relationship. If the girl talked to the guy about their non-existent relationship (and if she is smart enough) she would notice the generic terms he would use to prove to them that they are in a relationship and would quickly dump him, before learning about the slut. On the other side, girls who simply sleep with anyone, therefore called sluts, do help girls see the guy for who he is. If he is in love with you, if he RESPECTS you, he won't sleep with anyone else. Thank the sluts!
