Two girls are now being charged for making threats against the victim. Now I believe the state is looking into charging other people as well. Possibly for covering up the crime

got to pg 2 and the victim blaming pissed me off.
boys/men need to understand what consent is and what it is not.
you cannot consent when you are drunk. period. end of story. doesn't matter what she was wearing, who she was around, she did not consent and that is rape.
i give not one sh*t about them being labeled sex offenders. i'm tired of hearing how their lives are "ruined" now...they will still live out their lives fine. support needs to be given to the victim. i hope she moves the fvck out of that town and gets some intense therapy.
i wish that the other bystanders was charged.

Cases like this are horrible for sure, but I do hope people hearing about the case are learning. I hope parents are teaching and kids are listening. When I have sons, this will be yet another thing
I'll have to add to the list of things to teach them. It's not enough to
see someone being violated and walk away because you're not the one
violating them. I know as a dude, the way we are schooled, and
the peer pressure we're around makes us feel like we can't cockblock the
homies or play captain save em to girls "that dont wanna be saved."
Gotta instil in boys that they are not innocent or free of guilt if they
simply walk away from others being violated. This part really stood out to me.

At one point of the night of the incident,
Westlake, who was sober, determined that his friend Mark Cole was too
drunk to make a 10-minute drive home. At first, Cole refused to turn
over his keys, claiming he could operate his Volkswagen Jetta just fine.
Westlake was undeterred, though, eventually "tricking" Cole by waiting
for him to relax and then forcibly seizing the keys.
Yet
maybe a half-hour later, Westlake walked in on the girl, sprawled out
naked in the middle of a basement floor. To her side was Mays, exposed
and slapping his penis on the girl's hip. Behind her was Richmond, who,
Westlake said, was violating her with two fingers.
Westlake
said goodbye to the guys and kept walking. A good friend with his eye on
the safety of others just minutes before was suddenly unaware or unsure
of what to do – or simply uncaring enough to do anything at all. "Something
has gotten in there that said, 'OK, we need to prevent drinking and
driving,' " Hanna said. "We need to take it to that level with
preventing sexual assault." |
Reminds me of the Kitty Genovese case a little bit. The bystander effect part of it. Rape
education needs to be better, because I do think a lot of
teens/kids don't recognize non-violent rape as rape when they see it. I
didn't have any talks about this kind of stuff when I started going to
parties, and while you'd think basic human decency should prevail, I still think
it's important to have parent to child talks about these kind of
potential situations.

I do not understand how people have taken what I said and turned it into defending the boys. All I was trying to say was she is not completely innocent. But you see and perceive what you want so idgaf, my opinion stays.

her being "not completely innocent" by getting drunk means what though? leniency twd the ppl who think it's okay to sexually assault someone in a vulnerable state? these boys are predators. this is what they do.

I wasn't aware getting drunk takes away from anyone's innocence. I'm so sick of this hierarchy of rape victims. there are never mitigating circumstances. pointing out her actions and assigning some arbitrary value judgement is never necessary. ever.
