in my past experience, IT people can pretty much ask for what they want in salary. Especially if you're valued, and they don't want to lose you or your designs/code.

I need a mentor

YES!

This should be someone who has influence within your industry, preferably in your organization, and will be willing to act as a link between key people whom you should know. They should also know your work and your character so that they can go to bat for you when you're looking for new projects, more responsibilities, or a different role.

I don't know any black women that fit this description

I don't know any non blacks either to be fair but I would want a black woman to be my mentor

no one in my company fits this description

I need to go to more meetings given by the professional organizations I belong to

even when I go to the few meetings I do that go to, I am one of few blacks that are there, if any others are there at all

and the ones that are there are either the one black top exe or they are a few levels under me or admin

I'll make more of an effort though

and my dad would do what you all suggest, ask for more money and if they didn't give it to him he get another job

but he was in IT and this was in the 80s and 90s

I don't know which branch of psych you work in (I know you're in research though) but I have a great friend who would be a great resource. If she wouldn't be a good mentor (possibly because of difference in career scope) then she could definitely connect you with someone who could. I'll send you a PM.

ok. good luck.
I was just thinking if you can't find one in dmv, they aren't out there LOL. I love that there are so many blacks in position of power in careers in that area.

this is why i love IT. most of the time...the developers are making more than the managers anyways. I would never want to manage a team of ppl.

the guy in the OP should change jobs if he wants to make more money... i like to call it "self promotion"LOL

mostly because I haven't happened across them

not because I have sought them out and found none

and thank you BB!

I think you should not be too focused on only having a black female mentor.  Might be missing out on opportunities

and I don't know about too late, I mean my brother changed the industry he worked in his late 30s but I don't know if I have that in me

i'm an IT project manager...i have absolutely no programming experience or background. If I remember you studied psychology right? ....if you understand ppl, then you'll have no problems. LOL

The director of our school said some racist shyt at our MTG recently and I wanted to quit on the spot. There is a lot of workplace racism within admin and how some of the POC kids are treated by teachers.

Some days it is so frustrating that I long for a 9-5 cubicle job where I do nothing but TPS reports or some shyt
