Yes, and I was diagnosed as "paranoid schizophrenic". I've been in and out of the hospital about 10 times. My symptoms are severe and as severe as they have ever been but I will never go to the hospital ever again.

If you feel like something needs to be done today you can go to an emergency psych hospital, or maybe even an ER (not sure the rules as to whether or not they'd see you) and they can write you a prescription to hold you over until you get your own treatment team.  IDK how private hospitals are, but here, the county emergency psych center won't admit you unless your suicidal/homicidal.

Make a future appt with a psychiatrist (for meds) and a counselor or psychologist (therapy). It can definitely get better Hug

You may also want to contact your primary care physician, if you tell them you made an appt with a psych, but it's too far out in the future, they may be willing to prescribe something to help you in the meantime.

My mom checked herself in following the passing of her mother she went into a deep depression. She stayed for about 2 months total (came out and went back) and did counseling  sessions etc. then continued them afterwards for a year.

Yes, I've checked myself in before.  My advice to you would be to check the laws in your area on psychiatric admissions before deciding to check yourself in.  Where I live once you're in even if you voluntarily bring yourself you'll be there for at least 72 hours.  Basically a 72 hour hold.  Also, you can't leave until a doctor signs off on you.  That's for the state of va.

In NC I was able to check myself in and I also had to stay for at least 3 days and a dr. had to release me, but I could also just go to a mental health hospital and not get admitted and just be seen.   Its different for every state so check.

I would recommend trying to see a therapist and a psychiatrist for something for depression/anxiety but to be honest sometimes it can be a long wait to see a dr for the first time if you're not a regular patient.

You can call a hospital and ask them the regulations on "voluntary admissions."   Whatever you decide I wish you luck and I hope you feel better soon.

I had to go to a partial-hospitalization program. The next step was being checked in. This was all after my mom died.

It was worth it, sorta. The facility sucked. You might be better getting a regular therapist. (long term)

Yeah mental hospitals aren't really that beneficial.  I've been a few times, saw different dr's and was given different diagnoses until they came up with one final one.  Also, being black doesn't help.  They don't listen to you.   One Dr. even though I was making up the fact that I worked for the gov in cyber security, which I truly do.    My diagnosis isn't a "paranoid schizophrenic" (though they thought I was at one time).  Mine is Major Depression with possible  psychosis.  Basically if I get into a deep depression I can become psychotic smh.....     Anyway, the same meds are used to treat both, I would recommend to you to try to get on Risperdal.   Best medicine I ever been on, I feel normal, no side effects and I'm living life normally without any issues.   I had to have numerous trips to the hospital and try several different medicines before I found one that worked.   Good luck and wish you good health.

why?

I basically spent hours doing nothing. The only form of entertainment in the hospital is the television and the radio. I'm not going to do that all day. I'd rather be free to do whatever I want, eat whatever and whenever I want, and go wherever I want. No being locked up in a boring hospital for me.
