yes this is inspiration to learn. So many older members in my family learned to swim after a drowning.

I sorta learned to swim at summer camp. I do okay. My mom always told us to stay away from the water. That's my solution. People have to know their limitations.

This could happen to anybody, but it really makes me think of statistics that talk about blacks not knowing how to swim. Really important to learn, especially in our community. I learned around 5. I'll be teaching my kids early. It's a must living in Florida.

Is it still mandatory for schools to teach kids how to swim?

I remember in elementary school, every year for a week, we'd go to the swimming pool down the street for half a day of swimming.

This might have just been a Florida school initiative.
