Okay so...if you are African by blood and are born in raised in America that doesn't make you African American?

But then again I'm not derived from any Caribbean country so maybe there's a nuance in this I'm overlooking (or maybe it has nothing to do with being American).

I understand claiming Haitian American. But they're still African American at the same time. They're not not African American.

I respect your opinion though.

that's it. But Epitome and JP are doing a very good job explaining it. Star what happens is that a Haitian American may be a first second or third generation. Though being born in the USA, they aren't AA (because it technically is your term) how much you identify with and "claim" the land of your forefathers and foremothers lol depends on your parents and the individual as well.

An African born in the states would never bee an African american but would be a Nigerian-American for example. We are using nationality not continents for this discussion. Collectively if you are looking at a group of persons of African parentage born in the states you could say look at that group of african americans, i guess.

Im not sure how it is in Haiti but in Jamaica if you can identify one Jamaican grandparent you'll automatically be a Jamaican citizen, can get the passport and everything even if you've never set foot here or plan to.

JP or EPI what is the (nick)name for Haiti(an) again? It has slipped my mind. Like Yard, Bim, Naija, yankee etc

Maybe Epitome knows. I have no idea!  Haitians usually are given individual nicknames by our parents but I wasn't aware of a designation LOL
