They are saying the UN was negligent as far as screening the peacekeepers for cholera?
I think the UN should assist and pay .

However, Haiti's present conditions didn't do them any favors.
Shouldn't there be something to mitigate an outbreak?

Haiti is in shambles. It is not equipped to handle an outbreak of this magnitude. It's something else when U.N peacekeepers are deployed (some of which were very aggressive and brutal to the population, btw, beatings, rapes etc. ) and bring disease and death to an already impoverished country

^^easier said than done. it happened very shortly after the quake though...things were chaotic. i can see how mitigation would've been inadequate with everything else that was going on. people are still living in tents without potable water 3 years later, so...

The outbreak has killed more than 8,000 people and made 650,000 ill, according to officials, and scientific studies have shown the cholera strain was likely introduced to the country by UN troops from Nepal, where the disease is endemic, when contaminated sewage was discharged from their barracks into a watercourse. Before that cholera cases had been rare in Haiti.

The UN maintains it has legal immunity from such compensation claims and has formally rejected claims from Haitians affected. The case is being pursued by the Boston-based Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti and will be filed on Wednesday in the Manhattan federal district court, according to the New York Times.

Several scientific and medical investigators eventually concluded that one of the likely sources of the outbreak was sewage leaking from a U.N. base housing Nepalese peacekeepers. The base was perched above a tributary stream leading into the Artibonite River near the town of Meille.

Yep , UN should pay up.
It was their fault

Bunz you're Haitian right?

Have you been back ?
I know most of the money from the aid never really made it there but how would you compare Haiti now to Haiti 3 years ago?
