I've been doing my hair in basic shoulder length single braids and it takes me 6 hours. Today I went to 8 braiding stores and they gave me prices for doing my hair in the same style from $100-$160. I noticed they spent a little too much time deciding in French before they gave me a price so I'm wary they may be trying to overcharge.
Is there a single rate most hairdressers charge or can they just make up whatever they like?
How much does your braider charge you?

It would depend on how small you desire your braids and how close together you want them. For example if you want shoulder length braids the size of your pinky, this would run you b/n  $ 80-$140. So I think that quote is an okay quote.
Pricing is based on skills and how long it takes to do your hair. If you have a large hair count it will take longer and you will be charged closer to the higher quote.

Yes I was a bit surprised too. I hadn't had my hair done since back in the day. I would get those poetic justice type braids for 45-50 but this was years ago.

Check craigslist......I found a really reasonable braider in my area. Most of the braiders were cheaper than braiding shops.
