Things are going to get cut down and they do, but obviously this wasn't one of those things. HBO made this the most expensive episode in the series for a reason.
and they also did a terrible azz job making the non book readers give a damn about it
. giants and mammoths seemingly poofing from thin air. i was underwhelmed...
As I said in the post on the last page I agree with that. I bet 90% of the TV only watchers don't know who Mance is, what this fight is for, what the wildings want, and why the wall is so important to the entirety of westoros. Totally agreed that most people don't know and therefor don't care.
But cutting the battle down to 20 mins, reducing one of the most important battles in the series to a secondary moment would ensure that they never care about it. Now they are forced to engage in the material, without going to the kitchen to make a sammich while waiting for Tyrion or Dany to show up on screen.
I think a lot of people will appreciate this episode a lot more on the second view, after they've already seen all of the episodes, and aren't worried about plot progression or 'what we came for'.
As far as the mammoths and giants, haha they've been mentioning them over the past few seasons. Thought it was great to finally see them in action.
