A couple of days ago, we wrote about Bryant Collins, the man who rescued the 15 month old baby from crawling into a Georgia highway. After many of you read the story and celebrated Collins for doing the right thing, you wondered, like I did, where the hell were her parents?!
Well, Georgia NBC affiliate WXIA sat down with the parents to find out exactly what happened.
Timothy and Denise Pickens, who may both face charges of child neglect, first wanted to express their gratitude to Collins for finding their daughter Emily.
“He’s our angel, you know, we’re thankful to him from the bottom of our hearts.” Emily’s mother Denise said.
But they also wanted to clear their names. Timothy has been charged but Denise may be next. Timothy says, “We did not neglect our children; we were with them the whole time;’ we just stepped outside for a few minutes.”
The couple said they were outside bagging aluminum cans for recycling while Emily was napping inside the house with her three older brothers, including 12 year old James who the couple had left in charge of watching his baby sister.
Evidently, he didn’t do such a great job because when they returned to the house, the front door was open and Emily was gone.
The Pickens couple said they panicked, searched frantically for her for 10 minutes and then called 911. By this time, they were told Emily had been found wandering near the highway, 300 yards from her home.
Timothy, Emily’s father, was charged with neglect, reckless conduct and obstruction of an officer. When he got to the scene where Emily was being held by police, he pushed a deputy, trying to get his daughter back in his arms.
“My kids are my world and I couldn’t find her and all I wanted to do was hold her, to make sure she was safe, and they wouldn’t let me do that.”
Timothy says he regrets pushing the officer but he and Denise do not believe they should face charges of neglect.
Denise said, “She’s with us 24 hours a day; she’s never run off before, but we do watch her.”
Check out the video of the couple below.
