i think i'm getting confused if your interested in the smell or if its really virgin..the best way to ensure you are getting virgin (unprocessed) hair is to feel for the cuticle..which by the way unprocessed hair is virgin hair.. when hair is processed it is dipped in an acid bath to burn off the cuticles (the scales), that are on the shaft... after the processing only the hair's cortex remains, and is nothing more than a flat shaft...
virgin hair has not had this done so if you take a few strands between your thumb and forefinger and rub, you should see the hair riding up on each other...if the hairs are sliding back and forth then it is processed...there are some vendors that are leaving some of the cuticle on the hair to make it appear more natural, but then you have to ask yourself if the hair has a natural feel to it... does it seem dry? does it look like a bad dye job? you ban do a dye test with a small section of the hair..if its 100% cuticle intact virgin hair it will change color uniformly, it is develops streak or highlights or lowlights, then it probably has some mixed sythetic hair..

^^Yes I know this method, but the vendor informed me when I asked about unprocessed hair that it can have a smell to it, so I was asking before I ordered a unit if this was normal, I haven't placed an order, and was trying to see if I should or if something is wrong with the hair b/c I've never heard of anyone getting a virgin unit that had any smells to it.
But thanks for those other tips! I can still use those

My virgin unit doesn't stink and it didn't stink when I received it. If your unit comes to you stink just Febreeze it

If the hair smells after you wash it, its probably animal hair. I worked with a vendor that only sold expensive units that were $1200 and up, and sent some of there rival vendor's units to a lab to test the hair and sometimes it came back as animal hair. The customers said the hair would always smell when it was wet. Human hair should not have smell that can't wash out.

That's just what I have been stating all over the board... "THAT IS NOT VIRGIN HAIR AND ALL OF IT HAS BEEN PROCESSED MORE THAN LIKELY "..... but most were deaf or didn't understand. It would tangle to hell if it were real cuticle hair, ventilated the way they do it.
If you give them instructions not to process virgin hair and it's not done with great skill and care, it will probably tangle up something fierce! They have to either clip down every single knot as they finish a row of hair or process the ends of the hair so it won't tangle.
A silk top is different. There are no ends that fold over or return.
I suggested people not pay too much for this alleged virgin hair. They must process it to make it easier to work with.
Non-Cuticle Hair (aka Processed Hair): This hair type can also refer to all hair no matter the origin, including European. The cuticles have been chemically processed to remove the first few layers and fuse the remaining layers. The roots and tips can be mixed in opposite directions
. Advantages:
- Low Manufacturing Cost and No Tangles.
- Less labor time when making hairpieces, wigs or hair extensions and less hair required per unit.
- If cuticle process is done correctly, this is a permanent process and used to prevent tangles even if the roots and tips are mixed in opposite directions.
Disadvantages:
- High Hair Manufacturing Cost and Poor Quality.
- Unfortunately, this type of hair is usually mass-produced in large factories using harsh chemicals that greatly degrade the hair.
- Also the hair purchased for non-cuticle hair is usually non-Remy hair.
- When the chemical process is applied poorly and the hair extension starts to tangle, it tangles severely.
- Dye colors and perms do not last and the overall damage to the hair extension creates a very short life for this type of hair.
Common Use: Low to medium priced hairpieces, machine-made hair extensions and wigs.
Virgin Hair (aka European Hair, Cuticle Hair): All hair types no matter the origin. Usually refers to European hair as Chinese and Indian hair is rarely sold in their original colors and textures. This is hair that has not been chemically altered at any time and care must be taken to keep roots and tips from running in opposite directions.
Advantages:
- High Availability and Low Hair Manufacturing Costs.
- When it is truly virgin hair, the manufacture has very little preparation to perform before selling it.
- The lack of chemical processing leaves the hair extension in a healthy and natural state resulting in a longer life for the finished unit.
Disadvantages:
- Low Availability and High Cost.
- The dwindling availability of good virgin European hair, especially in lengths longer than 15, has made it an expensive commodity.
- There is still quite a bit of hair to find, but most of it is very old hair that has a musty odor and tangles very easily. Unfortunately, most Russian exporters are selling this type of hair.
Processed Hair (aka Non-Cuticle Hair, Non-Remy Hair, Asian Hair): All hair types can be chemically processed (cuticles, color, texture). Usually the term processed refers to non-cuticle hair and its most common form is non-remy hair. If handled well by the hair manufacturer, processed hair extensions can retain much of its original quality properties.

Not sure if you can feel a cuticle with your fingers, especially on this type of hair. I think you may need a microscope and to be able to know what you are looking at underneath it.

Sometimes they remove cuticles to make the hair thinner so it can look like european hair. Most of us don't want Euro hair anyway.

2angelz... i think u got ur answer when u were reading the weave section.. lol.. unprocessed hair has a smell.. cuz it was cut off of a human who may not have had THE best hygiene practices.. AM even said.. she's smelled temple and freshly cut hair and it smelled bad..
if you buy hair and have it sent for wig making.. it will probably come back to u smelling how it smelled when u purchased it.. unless the CV you sent it to washes it and gives it that coating or whatever they do to make it easier to work with..
