Topic: CAT OWNERS/dispel the myths & misconceptions Posted: 07 Nov 2009 at 11:05pm |
I'm a cat lover. I had 2 cats (one at a time) while growing up.
About two weeks ago, I discover a tabby cat and her 3 kittens were living in my backyard. They were living in an old wooden bench that has a hole at the top, so they would hang out on top of the bench and then jump inside when they wanted to hide. I started feeding them, once a day for about a week. Then last week Friday, I realized that the mother had moved her kitties. During this past week on 3 days, I put out cat food.... I figured the mother might roam about for food and I wanted to use up the cat food I bought.
This past Friday, I discovered the mother cat and her kittens are back. I'm guessing the kittens are 6-9 weeks old. The mother cat looks well fed, but she's not wearing collar so I don't know if she has a home. The mother cat is a bit wary of me when I go to put food out for them, but the last 2 times she has approached me but keeps her distance. I think the mom has made the connection of me and food. The kittens know the spot where I put the food, so they'll go there looking for food.
Purplehaze, I like your idea of the cat boxes. Right now, my backyard cats are living inside of a bench and they seem pretty comfortable and familiar with it.... but I wonder what will happen as it gets colder. Although for all I know, the mama cat may move her babies again tomorrow.

I know this is for Foxy, but some of my female strays have had kittens. Usually a mom cat will keep her kittens hidden from humans, but my stray momma cat is so cute, she brings her kittens over immediately (before they are even cleaned off well). People say that's because she trusts us. But I always have a box set up outside, and she will climb the fence, kitten in mouth and plop them down in the box, one at a time. One time she kept making trips and bringing over a kitten, and husband and I were watching from window counting like 'how many more does she have?' (it was 5 that time).
I've had most of them fixed now tho so I haven't seen any kittens in a while. We trap them (humane traps), spay/neuter, have the tip of their ears clipped to identify which ones have been trapped already, and release them back out. Whenever i see a cat out in the community w/ a clipped ear, i know it's one of my strays
Regarding feeding, I feed them twice a day. But pregnant and nursing cats eat much more often than that. Once the kittens are able to eat, I give them soft food. I have raised so many kittens I feel like a momma cat myself sometimes.

Wow... the momma cat climbing the fence with a kitten in her mouth to get to the box!!!!! so cute!!!! How soon after the kittens have been in the box wouls the momma cat let you and your husband approach and get close to them? So basically the momma cat would raise the kittens with the box as their main base/nest?

Aww. That sounds like how i got my 2 indoor only babies 7 years ago. Husband found them outside under the lawnmower. Their mom cat had them down there. At the time they couldn't walk or even stand. We started feeding the mom cat, and later soft food for them. Next thing you know , we adopted them and they're sleeping in our bed lol. I tease them that they went from sleeping under a lawnmower to sleeping on a pillowtop mattress on 600 tc sheets lmao. I love 'em tho. We trapped and fixed mom cat and she still hangs around outside. Checking on her babies i guess.

immediately. She loves us I guess. This isn't MY cats' mom cat, but another cat. But yeah she brings them right over to the box right up to our back door. I actually had to move them (by hand) one time when it started raining and water was getting in the box. Mom cat was nowhere around, so I went downstairs to get them and brought them to the upstairs box on deck. They were squealing so bad, and terrified of the water covering them up, I felt sorry for them and had to go get them. I think she brings her litter over to us because she knows we will help her care for them. She only had 2 litters of kittens tho before we had her fixed up.

I LOVE these pics! Im starting a new stereotype--- Black people have the cutest cats! No seriously, every time someone shows me their cats I tend to think that my cats are the only cute ones that exist but you guys have proven me wrong! These cats are adorable and I am lovin these stories! Yea man my cat is a trip, he lives with my mom and he follows her everywhere! If she stays up late past her usual bedtime, he'll meow her to death until she goes to bed and then he jumps in bed with her! lol

it's all part of trying to control the feral population. It can quickly get out of hand with each female having 5 kittens at a time, twice or sometimes 3 times a year.

Foxy, In see your strays have strange names like ours. We have 2 black and white ones that look exactly alike. You can't tell them apart except one meows when she comes over, and the other one never meows. So their names are "The Meow'er" and "The Non-Meower". lol. Hubby will come in and say "The Non Meower is outside."

Cats are awesome...
I'm an animal person but I prefer cats because of their independence.
My cat Diva is friend. I remember one day I was crying over something....don't remember....and she came up to me and started meowing like I've never heard her meow before.
Then she took her paw and begin to wipe my tears away. I thought that was soooo sweet, I stopped crying.

You are lucky....My husband would shoo them away and Scold me for feeding Strays....
I had the lady from PAWS (she is like the CEO of the shelter on Base) in awe that the Ferals were use to me and that I could actually Pet...Touch 5 out of the many (she witnessed me in action).....She was near my house because she captures/rescues the kittens for future adoptions...She thinks I would be an excellent candidate to nurse the kittens..etc...etc..... My husband would have a friggin HEART ATTACK!!!

My husband loved cats long before I did. I used to not like them so much, now I'm the one tending to them (except he does all the dirty work--love him). My friends can't believe I even have cats in the house, let alone taking care of strays.

Purple haze, I love your adoption story. The part of your statement that I bolded reminds me of my dad. He used to describe our first cat as "from a shepherd boy to a king". When I was young, my dad went to a co-worker's party and they had some kittens they were trying to get adopted, so my dad, knowing I wanted one, brought one home suprisng me and my mom. And sure he enough he became the little king of the house.

Wow Foxyroy19!!!! 17 cats!!! I'm loving all their names and that you know their personalities. I think it's great that you feed them, but I know it must be expensive. Did the older cats lead the younger kittens to your home?
Why doesn't Mr. Orange eat with the others?
So what does your husband say when you feed the cats?

Mr. Orange will only eat chicken cat food and even then, he will just take a few bites....I think he gets his meals from somewhere else. My friend was walking with me towards my house and Mr. Orange came trotting over to greet me. My friend was like, "What the hell?" He is very big Orange Tabby...
I think Paws usually round up all the kittens for adoption but the few stray kittens eventually find my house by following an adult Cat...Kit Kit, Tiger and Lily have adopted Eyes as their mother....since Bella scratches the hell out of them if they get to close to her...

I think my mama cat has two nests for her kittens. Do mama cats have two nests/homes?
I saw the mama and all 3 kittens on Sunday when I fed them. But later that afternoon, I did some cleaning in the backyard and garage and the mama and kittens diappeared into the bench. On monday, I did not see any of them, so I figured the mama had moved all he kittens....due to my noise. On Tuesday, I saw and fed the mama and 2 of the kittens. But I never saw the third one. This afternoon, I saw the mama an only one kitten.... I fed them and kept wondering where is the other one I saw yesterday. About one hour ago (it's now dark out) I look out an upstairs window... I can see one kitten sitting on the bench by him/herself (they usually come out when the mama cat comes out). Then out of the corner of my eye I see what i think is the mama running in the parking lot next to my house. About 5-10 minutes later, I see the mama and the missing third kitten running in the parking lot toward my house. It's dark out , but I keep looking out and see the 3rd kitten and mama in my backyard.....the kitten is looking at the 'food spot' for food. When I go out to give the kitten some food, (I figure he's not gotten any kitten chow since sunday...he's got to be missing this extra food) I don't see them. But as I am putting out the food the kitten comes running past me and then I hear a boy in the parking lot next door yelling "did you see that cat!" So i figure the mama is nearby or went to get the other missing kitten. So the mama and 2 of my 3 kittens got food today, but there is still one who is missing.
So does anyone know if a mother cat would keep her kittens separated on purpose?
I would love to adopt one or two kittens, but right now unfortunately it is not possible. So I'll just settle for feeding them..... although as this post shows I think and worry about these cats wayyyyy tooo much!!!

Does Eyes act like a mother to the kittens? Do the kittens try to sit in the chair with Eyes? Eyes is a female, correct? Does Bella scratch all the cats? Has she tried to scratch you?

Yes it is common for a mom cat to move her kittens often, usually it's to keep them hidden. One time, one of my mom cats brought over 3 of her kittens and set up her nest in one of the boxes. And then 2 days later I looked out and there was 4 kittens.! All I can figure is that she had left one of them in one nest, and brought the other 3 over here. Maybe that one was sickly o something and she didn't think it would survive (they all did survive tho). But that was the strangest thing to me. I even asked hubby "is it possible she had 3, and then 2 days later another one popped out?" lol. But i guess she had been going back to the ohter nest to check on the one she left behind, and once that one started thriving, she brought him over too.
