bullet Topic: HAS ANYONE TRIED THE NO SHAMPOO METHOD
    Posted: 24 Mar 2009 at 10:53am
I keep hearing about the curly girl method which involves never using shampoo, i want to try it but I'm really nervous about the buildup from all the product I use.  Does anyone never shampoo?  I use a sulfate free shampoo every week and even though my hair has frizz, my curls do have definition.  Does anyone only use conditioner on your hair, what difference has it made in your hair as far as curl defintion, manageablitity, and moisture?  Responses would be greatly appreciated.

The method your talking about is also called co-washing or no-pooing.I co wash almost everyday and it has made my hair softer and easier to comb. However I do use a gentle shampoo at least once a month and if I have product build up in my hair
It is not strength that causes me to stride confidently, it is lack of fear found only through God.

The key to the CG method is not to use products with cones in them, that way you don't need the sulfate shampoo to remove buildup of them.

I personally have not used a shampoo in I'd say two years.  The very day I first co-washed did it for me.  Occasionally clarifying, weekly co-washes/acv rinses is all my hair seems to need.

So does it just define your curls or make your hair softer?

For anyone interested in the Curly Girl method, here's a very nice "How to."

I tried just using conditioners and for an extra clean, I would add baking soda to the conditioner: MY HAIR HATED IT!!!  I was shedding like there was no tomorrow and my hair was dull as all get out.

In the past, I would, once a week, shampoo and follow up with a rinse out conditioner. My scalp and hair liked that better.  Now, I use ayurvedic powders (brahmi, shikakai, hibiscus and amla) to wash my hair.  I do this once a week.  I call this my no poo method because I am not using sulfates.  I follow up with a dc.

That's exactly what I was afraid of.  I finally got my hair to the healthiest state that it has ever been in and I'm sooooo afraid of messing that up.  I'm curious to hear other people's experiences but I'm not exactly sure about the no poo method.

You're welcome. As you scroll down to the bottom, you see the info about the cones.

Shampoo is fine as long as it is sulfate free. It is the sulfates that cause a lot of hair grief (dryness, split ends, etc.).

Conditioner is fine, and I prefer those with no silicones or at least a water soluble one. Silicones can also cause hair grief (dullness and breakage from buildup).

Co-washing only? It may be a good thing, but I would recommend using a conditioner with a water soluble silicone to prevent buidup.

It's about balance. (To me) Most of the regular stuff on the market is not any good for pre-poo, shampoo, no poo, co-wash, or anything. That's why I use organic shampoos and conditioners that don't have sulfates and silicones. I found that out about 4 months after my BC, and my hair did a 360 turn for the better.

I cowash only. I used a poo once and Cleo was like: ConfusedOuch! She basically went into shock. My hair drew up into the tighest ball I had ever known. That prolly happened because I hadn't used pooin like 3 yrs. ITA w/ the other memebr who stated its the sulfates that ya have to worry bout it. I use a clarifying conditioner 1x amonth or more if needed to combat product buildup, which I don't have w the no poo method.
LUV
PS going on three weeks and still looking good!
