Topic: Do Silk/satin scarves or pillowcases matter Posted: 28 Oct 2008 at 4:37pm |
|
Do they really make a difference? Has anyone seen a dramatic change in retaining their length? I don't even sleep on my hair--it rarely touches the pillow. But I wanted to know if anyone has seen a difference after the silk scarf or pillowcase.

I'm not really diligent about silk scarves, and I've been okay. Sometimes I'll do a silk/satin scarf. Sometimes I'll do a cotton bandana. Sometimes I'll wear a stocking cap. Every so often I go with nothing. My hair fares much better with something on it at night than with nothing. I can't imagine leaving my hair lose and sleeping on a satin pillow case. If I don't wear something on my head, my hair is impossible to deal with the next day. I could imagine losing a lot of hair from over-manipulation.

If I go more than two days without sleeping with my satin cap then my hair gets extremely dry and I have to baggy. Same thing when I had permed hair. Cotten can dry out the hair.

Satin and silk scarves and bonnets also reduce breakage. you know how the shirts you style your hair in will have some of the shed hair embedded in the fabric, well it will do the same if you sleep with a cotton hair scarf or pillow case. The hair will embed in the fabrics cause it to break off. It will also take the moisture out of your hair. It's up to you though

Let me say it this way um... YES! lol I went to sleep one night SO tired. I said "My hair will be fine without my bonnet." WELL I was wrong, I had so much breakage from tossing and turning (thats what does the damage for me) I was kicking myself for weeks. Wear a satin bonnet or a silk/satin pillow, your hair will thank you.

Before ! started healthy hair practices whenever ! would flat iron my hair it would be SUPER oily (from using huge amounts of grease) and afterwards ! would wear a (get ready) ... cotton scarf!!!! and in the morning my hair would not be oily AT ALL .... the cotton would suck out layers of oil and grease now imagine what it would do to hair that isn't even that oily. The silk and satin helps keep moisture ....

Yea, I do believe that a silk works b/c cotton is naturally absorbing and I think it does suck moisture out of hair. Especially while you are sleeping your hair is rubbing back and forth. Just think if when you wrap a wet towel around your hair, doesnt it suck up alot of the water??? I think its the same think. Me personally the scarves give me a headache at times so I use a Silk Bonnet and I love it slip it on an keep it moving.

Now if you want your hair to look and stay healthy, you need to be sleeping on a satin pillowcase. I had heard a lot about them from friends and also from my stylist. She told me that cotton causes friction leaving you with split ends and frizzes. It also is naturally absorbent so it pulls the moisture from your hair and skin. The combination of dried out hair along with weakened ends due to the friction that cotton creates causes your hair to have fly-aways and hair breakage. Satin pillowcases are actually recommended for people struggling with the hair loss side effects of chemotherapy, because your hair just glides across the top and doesn't get stuck in the fiber like it does with cotton. I switched to a satin pillowcase and I’ve seen a difference in both my hair and my skin. I don’t wake up with those pillowcase lines on my face in the morning either. There are many websites and retail stores that sell them. I found a website that has a page devoted to the benefits of sleeping on satin and they had some absolutely beautiful prints and solid pillowcases. I found a set that matched my bedroom colors perfectly.. The company is A Touch Of Satin. If you’re interested you can google them to read about the benefits of sleeping on satin and see what they have. Well, I hope this helps you out.

Definitely use silk or satin scarf to retain moisture. It will save you the extra work to mainntain softness.

I don't use or wear a satin/silk pillowcase or scarf. My hair stays soft. I cowash everymorning so that probally helps. But even when I don't cowash, can't say there's a difference from when I tried to use a satin/silk scarf(won't stay on my head). At night I put my hair into a single braid and tuck the ends inside, maybe that's why I haven't seen any adverse effects.

Well lately i've been using a satin pillowcase (can't find my satin head scarf) and my hair is retaining it's length for the most part.

I use my satin pillowcase far more than anything else, but will sometimes use a combination of bonnet/scarf and the pillow case and I see a DEFINITE difference. When I sleep on a regular pillow case my hair is frizzy as all get out (sorry, I'm a southern belle lol). I'd imagine that continued drying and frizziness would eventually lead to breakage. When I fall asleep on my satin pillow case without a scarf or bonnet my hair looks just fine. Recently I've started pinning it up, as to not flatten it on the sides and then just sleep on my satin pillow case and it works out really well. I always make sure my daughter sleeps on a satin pillow case... because she hates bonnets and scarves. So at home and when she goes on sleepovers, etc she takes her pillow with her satin pillow case on it and I don't have to worry about her hair at all. I never believed in scarves and these pillow cases much before BHM, but now I'm a believer...and my hair is a survivor!

Hmm I know that when I was relaxed I'd wrap my hair and sleep on a satin pillowcase b/c if I didn't when I woke up my ends would be bent and tangled. Not Cute.
And now I sleep with a silk bonnet. It just seems more protective. Since I have a TWA ... i can't rly wrap it or braid it so I keep the bonnet on, even if I'm just sitting around the house lol!

I use a silk scarf or bonnet. The bonnet tends to smash my hair into a ball at night so its not my favorite thing anymore.
With the silk scarf I use a little oil on my hair then wrap and tie down. lately I have received great results after flat ironing as long as I don't sweat in my sleep...lol

A trick I've learned when wearing the bonnet (or just sleeping on the pillow case) is to pin my hair up first. That way what's getting smushed is the under side of your hair. In the morning take the bobby pins out and shake and all is fine. It's sort of like the pineapple method only without the bands.

Yes I notice a difference. My hair maintains its style and it locks the moisture in

Thanks onmyjourney - I can admit that I was lazy about my hair care. It doesn't help that I have naturally fine hair which struggles to hold a curl.

I sleep on a silk pillowcase at home, and I notice if I sleep on cotton pillowcases elsewhere, if I forget a scarf, my hair is a bit more frizzy and dry than if I use my regular pillowcase.
