Topic: all beautifull skin challenge Posted: 18 Mar 2008 at 11:34am
so who's with me?
lets make it a routine to try out natural products to get our skin (face) healthy glowing. we can post articles that might help to achieve that.
we need to post before and after pictures of the face area (dont need the whole face) and see if it worked. maybe we can try it one month and see how it goes.
When cleansing and moisturizing your skin, it is imperative that you keep in mind that oil disolves oil. Do not be afraid of applying oil to your face. Oil, alone, will not cause you blemishes. Pimples, cysts, zits, blackheads and whiteheads are a result of several different factors including hormones, bacteria, dead skin cells and the buildup of these factors. Your skin naturally produces oil because it needs it. It is not a malicious force to be reckoned with, it is there for the benefit of your skin. It is naturally occurring. Oil helps lubricate, heal, protect, and moisturize your skin so that it may function properly. Properly functioning skin is beautiful, clear, and glowing.
While I'm talking about the benefits of oil applied externally, I'd like to mention how important it is to moisturize from the inside as well. WATER! Drink no less than 8 glasses of water a day. If your skin has issues with blemishes, drink up! Water will help release and remove the toxins from within, leaving behind glowing, dewey, toned skin. Carry a bottle of water around with you throughout the day so water is always available.
Now, to the point of this article.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) is used for moisture, while Castor Oil (CO) is used for cleansing. Castor Oil tends to be a bit on the thick side, so a mix of the two (EVOO/CO) is frequently used. This allows for the Castor Oil to really sink into the pores and draw out the dirt and grime to the surface. You can vary this ratio to match your skins needs. More EVOO for moisture or more CO for cleansing (25/75 EVOO/CO for Oily skin, or 75/25 EVOO/CO for dry skin). EVOO is incredibly high in antioxidants, while CO is excellent for drawing and healing. CO has been the focus of many books and medical discussion because of its seemingly "magical" healing properties. It only makes sense (after a bit of research) that one would use CO on their face to help treat blemishes and acne, or simply to make their skin look and feel better.
As quoted in The Oil That Heals by Dr. McGarey, a country doctor (unknown?) states, "Castor oil will leave the body in better condition than it found it."
The Routine:
Massage a substantial amount (the cup of your palm, while hand is held open) of EVOO/CO into your face and neck.
This is to be done over makeup or any visible dirt. Take this time to give yourself a facial massage. Really work the oil into your skin. Take your time, breathe deeply, and relax. Sit down to do this if it helps.
You, of course, do not have to sit and relax, but keep in mind that stress isn't good for your skin and you should take any moment you can to destress and let tension float away.
Take a washcloth, terry cloth or flannel preferred, and soak it in steamy hot water. Wring it out and drape it over your face.
What we are doing is steaming your face as an esthetician would, but without the steam machine. You want to open your pores. This helps release any impurities from deep within your pores.
As the washcloth begins to cool, gently wipe the oil and dirt away. This will also help remove any dead skin cells that are stubbornly clinging on.
Rinse the washcloth out in hot water and wipe away any remaining impurities. You may have to do this two or three times more to remove any remaining dirt and oil residue, but it will come off leaving your skin with a beautiful, healthy glow. No additional cleansing is necessary.
After you have rinsed well, you can either splash your face with cool water to help tone and close your pores, or if your face feels tight, you can moisturize.
If your skin feels tight, take a tiny drop of your EVOO/CO, rub it between your clean, damp palms and pat it into your damp skin. Massage any oil residue into your skin so there is no film of oil left sitting on the surface. Being prone to breakouts, myself, I've found that this is perhaps the most important step.
Depending on your skin type, here are some great masks to try. For oily skin use some plain Milk of Magnesia, rub it on and let dry, then rinse with lukewarm water. It absorbs oil wonderfully!
For Normal/combination skin mix one egg and 1/2 cup cooked instant oatmeal and a teaspoon olive oil until smooth. Spread on your face and leave 15 min then rinse.
For dry skin, mix one egg yolk, one teaspoon honey and a teaspoon olive oil and some vitamin E oil if you have it. Smooth on and leave on for 15 min. , rinse in lukewarm water and pat dry. If your skin is a bit dry you can put a dab or two of either olive oil, or any other light oil.
Homemade Facial Scrub Instead of Soap
This is for the lady who wanted a homemade facial mask. First, clean your face with water only. Never use soap. You can open your pores with hot compresses (washcloth) For a facial scrub, moisten oatmeal to a "goo", use it to scrub your face (not around your eyes). Wash off with cool water. You may also make a paste of the oatmeal and allow it to dry..remove with cool water. You may also beat an egg white, put it on your face and let it dry, rinse with cool water. Sliced fresh cucumber placed on your closed eyes will reduce bagginess and dark circles. To make your hair shine, rub in some regular mayonnaise, shampoo out after 15 minutes.
Honey for Best Facial
The best facial mask that i have found is honey. Use warm cloth to open pores, smear on honey, leave on 15 to 30 minutes, rinse off with warm water, and then use cold water to close pores. Use for 3 days in a row and then once a week. Sometimes I mix a little gound oatmeal with the honey, which makes a great mask.
Facial Feels Good
One my daughter and I had fun with and found to have a cleansing and softening effect was to mix regular clean kitty litter, the clay kind, with water and strain out the grit. It really felt good.
Exfoliating Mask
For an easy exfoliating mask, mix three tablespoons olive oil or any good oil and one tablespoon kosher salt mix and gently rub into dry skin. Do not use around eye area. This works great on elbows and feet, but it can also be used on cheeks and forehead
Egg Yolk
The best homemade facial mask that I have used is a raw egg yolk. just apply the raw yolk to your face and neck for 30 minutes and rinse with cool water. Egg yolks are high in vitamin A. The mask is very effective in healing blemishes.
Match Mask to Your Skin Type
For trouble-prone skin, mix oatmeal with water to form a paste.
For normal to oily skin, use an egg white.
For dry skin, use an egg yolk.
In all cases, spread mixture on face and allow to dry. Rinse thoroughly with cool water.
For oily skin, witch hazel makes an inexpensive toner.
For dry skin, you may want to add moisturizer while skin is still damp.
Oatmeal
The cheapest and best facial mask I have ever come up with is oatmeal processed to a powder in the blender and either skim milk or if you are trying to fade spots lemon juice. Really works well for me and I have dry skin.
More Facial Maks Choices
The kind of the mask you want to use depends on your skin type.
For dry skin, try:
an egg yolk mixed with olive oil and warmed honey
sour cream
plain olive oil
avocado
For oily skin:
dissolve a teaspoon of baking yeast in a small amount of warm milk, wait until foamy, then apply (best done in the bath tub);
puree flesh of a tomato and mix with some potato flour to make a paste;
cucumber (it will whiten your skin);
beaten egg whites with a few drops of lemon juice (great for getting rid of blackheads);
carrots (but don't use this one more than about every other week because it can overdry your skin). This one will make you look tanned.
General refreshing masks:
grapes (just cut a berry in half and rub lightly)
strawberries (test behind your ear first, because many people are alergic to strawberies used this way even thougth they can eat them just fine)
honey and ricotta cheese
Many fruits and vegetables can also be used to good effect. Anything acidic (lemon, strawberries, etc) will tend to whiten and refresh your skin, but you need to be careful if your skin is dry.
In general, don't apply masks more often than about twice a week, and try to vary the ingredients.
It is a good idea to test the mask first. Apply a small amount behind your ear, wait 20 minutes, then wash off. Then wait 24 hours. If the skin behind your ear is normal, then go ahead and use the mask.
Egg Yolk and Honey
I reader recently asked if anyone had a recipe for homemade facial masks. I often use an egg yolk and honey mask. Just mix one egg yolk with a little honey and spread it on your face and neck. When it dries, rinse it off. Your skin will feel so fresh and soft!
Put all the ingredients in a blender, or mash by hand in a bowl. Add extra orange juice if the mixture is too thick. Use your fingers to spread the mask over your face and neck and leave it on for at least 30 minutes, preferably longer, before removing. Use a warm flannel to rinse off the mask - this will help gently exfoliate skin as well as clean your face. This mask will keep for a day or two in the fridge if you don't use it all.
Honey face mask for sensitive skin
Warm a small pot of honey in a double boiler, then test a small amount on your hand to make sure it's not too hot. When warm, apply the honey generously over your entire face. Leave the mask on for 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm, then cool water.
Egg white mask for oily skin
Ingredients
1 egg white 6 drops witch hazel 6 drops lemon juice
How to make
Whisk the egg white until it's stiff, and then add the remaining ingredients. Gently apply the mixture to your face, avoiding your eyes. Leave to dry for 15 minutes or so. Rinse well with warm water.
Marie Antoinette's face mask
This wife of King Louis XVI of France was a legendary beauty. Many believe that this mixture was the secret of her clear and glowing skin - so much so that it's still used as a popular facial treatment in France. This mask is suitable for all skin types, but the witch hazel and lemon can be harsh on dry skin. If you indulge, be sure to use your regular moisturiser afterwards.
Ingredients
1 egg Juice of one lemon 4 tbsp cup non-fat dry milk powder 1 tbsp witch hazel
How to make
Put all the ingredients in a blender or food processor and mix well. Alternatively, you can blend them together by using a fork or a wire whisk. Apply the mixture to your face, neck and chest and allow it to dry for around 15 minutes. Use the remaining cream as a cleanser to remove the mask. Then, rinse your face thoroughly with warm water and pat dry.
Butter face mask
Ingredients
1 tbsp unsalted butter, softened 1 large strawberry, mashed Or 1 2.5-cm (1 inch) slice of cucumber, chopped and rubbed through a sieve (for normal to dry skin) Or 1 tbsp lemon juice (for oily skin) Or 1 egg yolk (for dry skin)
How to make
Beat the butter in a bowl, then beat in your chosen ingredient. Apply mask immediately and leave on for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove with a wet, warm washcloth. Butter is a good source of vitamin A, so it makes a perfect mask for sensitive, sunburned or damaged skin.
Natural Homemade Face masks Recipe
To have a natural beauty is a blessing for a womanbut most women tend to lose it through their own negligence in their bid to out do each other in modernity. As soon as she reaches adolescence, a girl is attracted towards artificial make-up.The excessive use of make-up makes one lose her natural beauty. The pores of the skin get clogged by these make-up things. Clogging prevents the carbon dioxide inside our body from coming out and also prevents fresh oxygen from entering the body. This results in the skin losing its original glow. The face becomes unattractive. It must be remembered that to regain the lost beauty is extremely difficult. Facial, once a week, keeps the face attractive. For a facial the face is first thoroughly cleaned. After that it is massaged and steamed and then the face-pack is applied.

A Natural Homemade Moisturizer
The skin's ability to stay hydrated is an important factor in its ability to maintain softness, suppleness and elasticity. As skin ages, or as it is exposed to environmental stresses and chemical agents, it loses this ability to retain water, becomes dry and appears wrinkled. Honey is an excellent Homemade Moisturizer. Honey is a humectant, which means it attracts and retains water. So honey is a natural fit for a variety of moisturizing products including cleansers, creams, shampoos and conditioners. Because honey is also an anti-irritant, it is suitable for sensitive skin and baby care products.

Essential oils
When using essential oils in masks or on the skin, it's very important to use only 100 per cent pure essential oils from health food shops. Avoid those labelled "perfume oil" or "fragrant oil" as they are synthetic and won't be of benefit - in fact, they could harm your skin. Essential oils are immensely powerful, so use no more than two drops in a mask. (If you are pregnant or have health problems, check with a qualified aromatherapist before using essential oils).
dry and normal skin: lavender, evening primrose, sandalwood.
oily skin: geranium, lemon, ylang-ylang.
pimple: evening primrose, clary sage, lavender.
acne: carrot, evening primrose, tea-tree.
eczema: carrot, chamomile, lavender.
Making A Mask
First, make a base mask (recipe below), which will store indefinitely. When needed, add fresh ingredients to make a "ready-to-wear" mask, which should be applied immediately. Keep your hair off your face with a shower cap or headband and cleanse your face before applying the mask. Smooth the mask over your face, then relax, leaving the mask on for 10-15 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water, and finish with a cool splash before moisturizing.

• 1 tablespoon finely ground rolled oats or other binder
• 1 tablespoon dried skim milk powder
• 1 tablespoon any foods from "mask imgredients" list

Mix kaolin, cornflour and oats or other binder. Store in a tightly covered jar. When needed, mix one tablespoon of the base mixture with skim milk powder and any of the ingredients suitable for your skin type listed in the "mask ingredients" list. Add essential oil. How to make facial mask?
Masks are a really good way to pep up skin, in no time at all. Cleansing masks, which often contain clay or fruit, absorb excess oils. The enzymes in fruits such as papaya have a deep-cleansing action and leave the skin glowing.
Moisturizing masks give drier skin a real boost, smoothing our fine lines and refreshing the face. Some moisturizing masks also contain toning and firming ingredients, such as seaweed, herbs and aromatherapy oils and are excellent as complexion-improves before a party or after a late night.

When I was a teenager I had very oily skin, and hence acne outbreaks were not at all an uncommon thing. Even now as an adult I still have problems with areas of my face being quite oily. This can be a very irritating thing as it can cause make-up to melt, your skin to look shiny and can make acne a very real thing even for those of us far past the age where we should have to worry about such things. My mother actually taught me about an all natural face mask that you can create from something you probably already have in your home and it does what any of those expensive face masks that you see in all the boutiques do without the high cost. Here are directions for how to create an all natural face mask that you can use once a week to help keep oily skin and the problems it can cause at bay.
Instructions
Difficulty:Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
Packet or two of yeast
Warm water
Wash rag
Small bowl
Step 1: Purchase a pack of three or four yeast packages. That’s right, I’m talking about the yeast you use to make bread rise.
Step 2: Tie your hair up and away from your face.
Step 3: Empty one packet of yeast and then add just enough warm water to make a paste in a small bowl. If you can’t make enough paste to cover your face with one packet then add a second packet and additional water.
Step 4: Apply the paste to your entire face, avoiding the areas around your eyes and lips.
Step 5: Allow the paste to harden. The interesting thing is you will feel the paste drawing the oils out of your pores, and believe me if you have really oily skin, it feels good.
Step 6: The mask should harden in about fifteen to twenty minutes. Once it is done, take a washrag that has been soaked in warm water and use it to loosen up and moisten the dried mask until you can wash it all off. You should notice a huge change in the condition of your skin, and it can also help to remove black heads because the mask helps to loosen and pull this hardened gunk out of your blocked pores.
Tips & Warnings
When making the paste, you want something thick enough to stay on your face, but not so gooey that it dries too fast. Start out adding a small amount of water and keep adding it until you have a good consistency.
Don’t scrub your face harshly when removing the dried mask because your skin will get red and chafed if you do. You want to use warm water and a washrag to gently moisten and loosen the mask until you can wash it off.
Test a bit of the mixture on your inner arm, if it turns red, or you have any sharp uncomfortable stinging then do not use this mask on your face
Skin toners ensure complete removal from the skin of all cleansing preparations. They freshen and tone up the skin and prepare a clean surface for the application of make-up. They also restore the acid or alkali balance of the skin, because they are pH balanced. They are designed to penetrate pores, refresh and cool your skin while clearing away excess oil, impurities and dead skin cells that were not removed with your cleanser.
Toners restore the skin's natural pH balance. When you wash your face, the pH balance of the skin is distorted leading to skin working overtime to restore pH levels; the process of skin restoring the pH levels on its own can take up as much as half and hour or more.
