Summer Research Program at UCLA



This program is open to qualified nursing students from any undergraduate institution in the United States currently holding junior status. Preference will be given to first generation college students.

This program offers junior nursing undergraduates with outstanding academic potential the opportunity to work on research projects with nursing faculty mentors. The eight-week program, from June 2016 to August 2016, is designed for students who plan to pursue the PhD Degree and enter academic careers in nursing. Included in the eight weeks will be formal and informal discussion on career options, GRE preparation and other activities. Each student participant will be assigned to a faculty mentor matched as closely as possible to the student's research interests and career goals. Participants will either assist the faculty member in an ongoing research project or, with approval of faculty, work collaboratively with the mentor in designing a new project of mutual interest. Research areas are: Biobehavioral Sciences, Biologic Sciences, Health Disparities/Vulnerable Populations and Health Services Research.

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • For qualified nursing students currently holding undergraduate junior status.
  • Preference given to first-generation college students and applicants who are attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI), Minority Serving Institutions (MSI), Tribal Colleges and Universities Programs (TCUP). 
  • Cumulative, minimum GPA of 2.80.

Scholars will be asked to update information on their educational and career activities for a period of up to three years after the completion of the program. This tracking is done solely to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. It is critical that we conduct this long-term evaluation in order to maintain continued funding for the program. The information collected remains strictly confidential.

Award

All program participants (including UCLA undergraduates) are required to reside in assigned University housing. Out of state students will be provided with up to $450 for round-trip travel from home to UCLA. Students traveling within California will be provided with a maximum of $200 for travel expenses. A stipend in the amount of $2,400 stipend to be used for: personal expenses, supplies (zip disks, etc) and extracurricular activities. Plus a meal allowance of $825.

Deadline

All application materials and supporting documents must be received by March 31, 2016. Preference will be given to applications that are completed by the program's deadline. Notification of decisions will be made by the end of May 2016.

  • Verification of your Current Financial Aid Package. If you are currently receiving financial aid, the program requires a copy of one of the following documents: Financial Aid Award Letter, Financial Aid Contract or Financial Aid Transcript covering the 2015-2016 academic year.

Nursing Students

The Nurse Extern Program at St. Jude is an employment opportunity for nursing students interested in pursuing a career in pediatric oncology nursing.

Extern roles are valued at St. Jude and give nursing students within a year of graduation the opportunity to acquire valuable skills and knowledge working with experienced nursing staff in a highly specialized pediatric oncology environment.

Benefits to the student nurse

  • The nurse externship role at St. Jude enables the student to establish valuable professional relationships.
  • The externship can assist the nursing student in making informed decisions regarding specialized practice based on actual experience with nurses, patients and their families.

The nurse extern experience at St. Jude

  • The extern will attend new employee orientation.
  • An experienced nurse will provide preceptor/mentoring in assigned clinical area.
  • The nurse extern will provide care to the patient including therapeutic play or sitting with the patient when needed; help order meals; baths; linen changes; provide relief for patient or guardian; etc.
  • The nurse extern will also take non-routine vitals when needed.

St. Jude offers nurse externships in the following areas:

  • Inpatient leukemia
  • Inpatient solid tumor
  • Inpatient bone marrow transplant
  • Intensive Care Unit

Requirements

You are eligible to apply if:

  • You have completed basic medical/ surgical nursing in an accredited school of nursing and;
  • You are within 12 months of graduation.

Nurse Education Assistance Loan Program


Description

The Nurse Education Assistance Loan Program (NEALP) provides financial assistance to Ohio students enrolled for at least half-time study (or accepted for enrollment) in an approved Ohio nurse education program. NEALP provides funding for nurses who intend to serve as instructors or students who intend to serve as nurses after graduation.

    Missouri Professional and Practical Nursing Student Loan Program

    Description

    Forgivable loan for Missouri residents enrolled or accepted into a nursing program at institutions in Missouri on a full-time basis. The attended college or university must have an 80% pass rate in their nursing program.
