They are being so silly with that one. They know darn well that "The Cross" was another common gnostic way to refer to Jesus.
I love the stories about Simon. The person who wrote the stories about him and Peter's rivalry was a trip. I always think Peter = Gandalf and Simon = Saruman. There should be a movie!

What?
Are you saying why would God want you to follow him out of fear?
If that's what you meant.... I'm not fearful at all. I haven't been scared into my beliefs.
Even if I found out there was no such thing as hell or heaven, I wouldn't jump ship and like I've been freed from bondage.
I hope that answered your question?

Well, the question what would happend to my soul if I don't believe in God.. would make me fearful that If I didn't believe in him then I would go to hell . So, therefore I would be a follower of Christ not because that is what I truely believe but because of the "what if" But, I understand you view point.

Well this is the crux of my issue with religion. God has so many human emotions. My thing is how many centuries and generations have passed since creation? Haven't we satisfied "HIS" need for adoration? I forgot the movie, but it reminds me of the one where all the gods were dying because humans had stopped praying and believing in them. Why does this entity NEED or WANT us to do anything? I am a parent and I don't desire my children to constantly fall at my feet thanking me for giving them life and taking care of them.

The quote I was thinking about sums this up perfectly, it starts with "Man created God in his image....."

The discussion on this page reminds me of Life of Pi.

From the Life of Pi movie. Skip for spoilers.
“So tell me, since it makes no factual difference to you and you can't
prove the question either way, which story do you prefer? Which is the
better story, the story with animals or the story without animals?' Mr.
Okamoto: 'That's an interesting question?' Mr. Chiba: 'The story with
animals.' Mr. Okamoto: 'Yes. The story with animals is the better
story.' Pi Patel: 'Thank you. And so it goes with God.”

I'm going to be honest and say I do not know the answer to that question.
I've felt God's presence for myself enough to not feel pressured or frightened to believe in God just to save my soul.
But I hear you. I see exactly what you're talking about.

I heard something similar to this a long time ago.
I love the way the man worded it. Would you rather gamble living your life believing that there is no God, only for you to die and find out there is after its too late to repent and receive salvation?
Or live your life believing that there is a God, and find out that there isn't one.
Honestly I would rather live believing God exists even if in the end He doesn't.
I don't see any risks or dangers associated with believing. I'm not about the other life.... at all.

you can't give yourself to God when you're scared. if you're doing that, then i'll see you in hell. =)
i would feel its a bigger gamble to "believe" in God, and pretend you're being faithful. you might be fooling yourself into thinking you might be going to heaven.
basically, believing in god isn't the only requisite to be in his grace.

I respect everyone view points and I will never mock or make fun of other peoples religious beliefs.
