I am so skeptical about flu shots.  I never had a flu shot and I am scared to get one.  My kids never had flu shots either and they never had the flu.  I had the flu twice in my life.  I was considering getting the h1n1 shot for my kids but now I am scared. I also seen something on abc world news this morning about a 9 year old boy got swine flu and was in the hospital and was near death. But he is coming around slowly but surely.

Maybe you don't need a flu shot then.

I have gotten them every year for 9 years with no side effects.  I notice when I get the flu shot, I don't get cold either--not even a cold symptom, which is nice when everyone else around me is sniffling and sneezing.  It really makes me feel immune.

You might not even be at risk for the flu.  My kids have never had a flu shot but each child has had the flu before.  I am undecided on the H1N1 vaccine for them, but then again I don't want them to be sick one day and near death three days later.

That is so sad.

People need to be aware that though they say its safe there is a possibility of life altering side effects.

"rare case" bitch stfu I don't trust you or it and I'd rather be sick for a few days than take the flu shot it's not that serious people. Beside if you take the flu shot eventually your body will become immune and when a new stronger disease come out people will have to find new ways to fight that as well just like washing your hands.

I was sick a few weeks ago I had the runny nose then after that the coughs (I hated that period) but I got over it! Just remember a few days for the body to restore itself and plenty of liquids.

I'm scared.  One hand I do not want to get the flu shot because of all the possible side effects and on the other they keep hyping up that more people are dying and they do not have underlying health issues. So IDK maybe it is the media trying to put a spin on things but it just makes me want to stay home until April

When you get the flu "shot" you are actually getting a killed (non live) version of several of the currently circulating flu viruses.  The way flu shots work is that it presents certain physical substances of the current flu viruses to your body (for example a protein that is typically on the virus' coat).  Your body recognizes these substances as "foreign" and begins creating antibodies to attack them.  The idea is that should you ever become exposed to the real thing later in time your body will be able to recognize those physical characteristics and mount a response preventing the virus from infecting your cells and having an effect.  For individuals who feel "sick" after flu shots some of this may be due to the fact that by they were not protected by the vaccine given.  The flu shot of a given year does not protect against all strains of the flu virus.  What happens is every year scientists come together and they look at which strains of the virus are currently circulating, they do this by looking at which virus strains are circulating in other countries during their peak flu season.  So for example in when it is summer here and winter in South America they will look at which individual strains of the virus are causing the majority of the infections and make sure that the current year's flu vaccine in North America protects against those strains.  Now it could be that someone who gets a flu vaccine may still go on to become infected with the flu if the strain they get infected with wasn't one of the those targeted by the current vaccine.  For some of you who are opting out of getting the vaccine, there is a concept known as herd immunity.  Because so many other individuals around you may have gotten the vaccine you are in some way protected simply due to the fact that those individuals are less likely to acquire the flu and thereby less likely to infect you.

I work in a ER and didn't think twice about getting the shot. Myself nor coworkers that I know of that got the shot are having any problems. No one has checked in for any adverse reactions to the shot either. You never know what underlying things may have been going on with her before the shot. I feel bad for her I do. but if you are not going to get the shot be very very cautious.
