Really want make a Difference . The head nurse over my unit in the ER Complaints are off the hook and nothing happens . I made sure she knew to never mess with me due to my race .

The problem is that even many other nurses( i frequent go on nursing forums as I am nursing school and work in a hospital right now) do not agree that the nurse should sue because people discriminate all the time, saying they don't want a male nurse.It is common, especially here in the south, for a pt. to say they don't want a male nurse to even give them a bedpan! God forbid they can't breathe and the only person there to help them is a male or black nurse. Hospitals are about customer service and if it means giving the pt. what they want, regardless of bad it looks, they will do it for the money! It is a business and the customer is always right.
Hospitals have to amend their Patient Rights and draw the line so patients stop abusing the nursing staff. We already get abused enough as it is!
Fortunately, most of the nurses I work with are black, so pts. can't really get away with that kind of request here.

I believe in the customer service aspect. You pay for the care you want.. If he didn't want black nurses and they were able to fulfill his request while mainlining appropriate patient care, I don't see a problem.

when my son was in the NICU there was a large mixture of races. I was blessed enough to be there everyday almost all day then my husband would get off work and go up to visit.  so I saw several shift changes.  I do know they try to honor wishes to keep things tranquel in an already stressful situation because not only do you have the stressed out parents but you also have other sick babies and stressed out parents its a delicate balance.  I would have told him to take his baby bc it would upset the other parents but i can understand why they agreed. I don't condone it but the baby comes first

I don't know what to say. We've discriminated at our job too now thinking back on it. I live in Michigan close to Dearborn the Arabic "capital" of the USA and the women always request a female technologist to work on them. We comply. Now the race issue I feel a little differently about.......

I don't know why the hospital is being sued. I would be honored to not care for some racist's baby.

na customer service doesnt excuse this. if the staff is qualified and your race preference cant be met... take your business elsewhere.
it's not up to any business to pass along bigotry.

care about your employees more than a racist.
it's that simple.

And women ask for women nurses/doctors all the time...when men are just as qualified. Bigotry is bigotry.
