I have about 3 unopened, expired bottles of biotin in my cabinet and I was wondering if it would be safe and effective to crush them up and add them to my hair cremes, then add directly to my scalp.  I would just hate to throw them awayCry.

I asked this question of a vitamin professional.  Will it hurt me if I take expired vitamins.  He said that it probably wouldn't hurt me, but that it probably wouldn't help me either because the ingredients were probably inactive.  HTH.

I agree with exactly what ebonimama said, it's useless. That's why we get ride of them when they expire. You can still use it, but won't get the maximum effect.

i don't want to orally take them, i want to put them into my hair mixtures.  Do you still think that it would be a waste of time?

Chances are they are still active (if they just expired), but it is also likely that if the compond isnt broken down already that it is in the process of breaking down.  Once a chemical compound breaks downs, its effects/potential benifits decrease significantly (a stronger suppliment could even be malicious).  I understand that you want to salvage these three bottles to make a topical creme, but it would be more benificial to just go to wal-mart and get there $1.50 bottle of biotin and that way you are assured that your new topical creame is the most effective that it can be.  Why waste three months of using this creme and see no results when you can just buy another $1 bottle and reap all the benifits?! Wink

So md, have you made a creme like this before (using biotin) and have you had success with it?

i usually make different hair cremes but I have never tried to mix any powdered vitamin into it.  I was just thinking that applying it topically would still be benificial even if I didn't orally take it.
