Topic: Excessive shedding during period Posted: Nov 19 2012 at 3:29pm |

I'm due for my touch up next week so I've been trying to be really gentle with my hair. Been really gentle and consistent with my regimen the past couple of weeks. Don't have a lot of breakage, in fact it's been getting less and less. Then all of a sudden BAM! My hair is shedding A LOT. There's more than twice the usual amount of hair on my comb. It was so sudden and I don't believe it's from a product because it happened between wash days. Then I realised it was that time of the month. Could this be the cause? I've never really payed attention I guess, coz my hair's usually braided and I rarely comb it. Does anybody else experience more shedding during their periods?

hmm, you may be onto something. I get a lot of shedding too, I think I am going to watch out and see if it increases around the time of my period. Do you take a multivitamin? I try to just because I know I don't get enough iron from my crappy diet.

Never had that issue, but it is possible, especially if you bleed alot. Another thing to consider is the more your hair grows the more it will shed. Whether natural or relaxed know what 100 hairs look like. Because hair sheds up to that much per day. My hair is natural and tightly coily it looks like a lot to me when it sheds. So I picked up the balls of hair and pulled them apart to see how much hair it actually was. Like 3 hairs look like 10 because it is all balled up.

@bella and tatee I take a multivitamin daily and I went to the doc for a for some bloodwork a couple of months ago because I had an undetermined allergic reaction. They said I had no irregularities in my blood other than a high ammount of white blood cells due to the reaction. So def not anaemic.
@Veemack My hair is relaxed but still kinky so I have the same prob. It does look like a lot of hair! Lol. But yea, I usually gather my hair from the comb, stretch it and twist it rather than roll it into a ball. The 'rope' I twisted was nearly 3 times thicker than usual. And it was also a little longer so I could tell it was mostly shed hairs.

Hey there! You stated that you wear your hair in braids and don't comb your hair. Could it be possible that the 'excessive' shed hair is the normal amount of shed hair one could expect from wearing braids?

Hey @luvmybiga$$fro I'm no stranger to shedding after unbraiding. I unbraided my hair over month ago and the massive shedding usually stops after 2 washes.

I haven't noticed this, but I also take garlic pills to prevent
excessive shedding. I tend to PS frequently with flw's - which will lead
to what looks like more shed hairs when I take my hair out of the
twists I wear under the stocking caps. But if you PS for a month, you're
going to have what looks like a lot of shed hairs when you detangle.
Try garlic pills. :)
