What separates a fad rapper from a legend? longevity?is it sales? lyrics? renowned? a combo ...or does one out weight the others.

It all depends.

In the case of LL, he was the first rap star. Def Jam was the first hip hop label. LL's album was the first album released on Def Jam. Had it flopped, who knows if Def Jam would have survived. If Def Jam doesn't survive, who knows what happens to hip hop as commercial music?

Because the album was a smash, LL became the first king of hip hop. Then he went on to influence dozens of stars that came after him. And as he created hits, he also held his own on the battle field (Kool Moe Dee/Canibus battles) which further added to his credibility. He was a legend before the 90s even began.

It's different for every artist though. Big L, for instance, is renown by many as a legend even though he had neither longevity nor album sales. He influenced a ton of rappers though. Influence I think may be the biggest factor, even bigger than album sales.

fwiw, I don't think Drake is a fad rapper.
