I went to a different salon recently and the hair dresser is African. I told her that I am going natural and that I do protective styling with wigs and breading under. She told me its not good to wear wigs all the time and our hair b black hair in particular needs sone natural sunlight to grow faster and more healthy.

She may be on to something because back home in the Caribbean when younger I remember spending time in the sun walking to school etc and my hair was in its best shape then in terms of length and thickness and I wasnt doing anything special to it just regular washes once a week...I also did not wear wigs or weave. Its amazing how natural vitamin D is good for us in some ways. But yea stilk gotta protect our skin right.

I don't know about that. It probably had to do with you having washed your hair more often, meaning that you were introducing moisture to your hair on a regular basis. Where as with protective styling and wigs, you tend to wash your hair less, allow it to build up and dehydrate. But overall, she is right, it's just for a different reason.

Look into this method, it's called the max hydration method. I've been retaining length easily doing it, and my 4c hair is soft all the time now, and easy to manage. Also my product free hair is developing max hydration, which is when your product free, clean hair begins to coil from the root to tip.

As long as you do not wear a wig or a hat, your hair ALWAYS gets natural sunlight, even when you are inside  as long as there are windows. Some wigs are vented on a web/mesh cap so you even get filtered sunlight on the scalp with them. You would not want to wear a nonvented wig in the Summer time anyways. I think your hair would also get natural sunlight even with a weave, provided you don't make it too thick. Also, take it from someone who has freckles, the sun's rays even reach our head and face during cloudy days in the Winter time.
ETA Just make sure you don't make your wig on one of those opaque black wig caps yourself. Use a mesh wig cap if you want to keep your scalp cool and get sunlight on the scalp. I honestly think the stylist just wanted to keep you coming in to get your hair done instead of wearing wigs.

When I go to the Caribbean my hair grows fast, even if I'm there for two weeks, and it's because of the humidity not the sun.

Protective styling works mostly by protecting our weaker ends.

Good Luck

I have never heard of this, but I wouldn't doubt it

people forget, everything put here for us in nature is what we were meant to have. whole foods, sunlight, water, active lifestyle...that is what's good for you so why wouldn't it be good for your hair?

I have read recently that the sun has the same effect on hair as it does on the skin.
Especially with Global Warming, the Sun is now more damaging.

Use Sunblock, and a Sun Hat.

A bit of sunlight won't hurt your hair, sunlight in contact with skin is responsible for vit D production. We all need vit D. I don't know if it hurts or hinder hair growth but I do agree with your stylist about letting your scalp "breathe" and rotate between protective styles and your natural hair.
