Is he or she medicated? Why or why not? Has medication really helped?

I'm dealing with a child who may be ADHD and I am NOT wanting this child to be medicated. The teachers keep telling me that medication WILL help calm the child down but I've just heard so many bad things......I've done my research and there are other alternatives however this child is failing miserably in school and the teachers are somewhat at wits end. I didn't know exactly what I was getting into when I took on the responsibility of this child however the parents are NOT capable right now and this is temporary...

no really.. I'm pretty sure fish oil has been proven to help ADD people.
i havent eaten and I'm tipsy so i can't explain right now how all the neurotransmitters are helped by fish oil right this second… but google it.
i have ADD as well.. but even before i really knew/got meds i researched all the benefits of fish oil and learned about how it can help with it.

Thank you Coconess! I'm reading its a link between DHA and ADHD that cannot be explained completely. I'm off to research some more!

Tried 'em as an adult and I wasn't a fan. I felt too hype and anxious on them and stopped. I had to learn coping skills and organizational skills (thank you therapy) to get a handle on it. I still have my moments but they don't negatively affect my school learning.

I don't see anything wrong with trying medication and therapy to learn how to better cope with an ADHD mind. They think differently and you just have to figure out how to work with them meds or no meds. If you're against meds entirely, try therapy to help.

I completely understand having an aversion to using meds for this, but for some kids... it's a life saver. Unfortunately, not treating it early enough leads to A LOT of kids falling behind, and once youre behind, it's so hard to catch up later on Cry

I'd say go ahead and try the alternate routes if you want to do that first, but don't delay. There are various options for meds and they can adjust them until you find the right fit. I've heard a lot of good things about Vyvanse as people seem to think its not as intense as Adderall, but works well. Theres also straterra, focalin etc. Good luck, dont wait too long!

Does your child have an active diagnosis of ADD or ADHD? If he/she does not I suggest you see a developmental specialist along with a child psychiatrist and request a social worker outside of your school. If your area has a developmental children's center I suggest you start there as they usually have all these services available.

Our twins have severe ADHD and we tried all sorts of adaptive behavior modification, therapy, vitamins, non stimulant medication(gaunfacine) and we recently moved on to a salt amphetamine. I wish I could tell you that any one of these is the answer but it is not. The best way of coping I have found is a mixture of all these therapies. For us there is a relationship between their school, home, and their developmental specialist, and we work together on behavior modifications as well as medication which is the best way IMO. We follow a very strict routine at school and home which helps as well.
If you don't have a behavioral specialist I suggest you get the best one available in your area. Start your child on a behavioral modification plan and develop a routine at home/school. As far as medication it can be a good thing and not all are created equal. There are many non stimulant options that carry lighter side effects which your physician can administer in low doses and can be titrated as needed.
Also I used to be a drug representative for a ADHD amphetamine so I have been trained on the difference between most of the ADHD drug options. If you have any specific questions or advice pm me. Good luck.
