Topic: do weaves cause hair breakage? Posted: Mar 31 2008 at 9:35pm |
Hey, was gonna get my first weave.
My hair's decent length anyway (BSL) but wanted a different look, and don't like tonging and straightening my natural hair much, but guess I can do what I like with a weave...
but wondered, does process of sewing it on cause the hair in the cornrows to break? cos i was gonna use it to grow the back of my hair which cut due to the last woman who did my hair leaving the relaxer on the back for much too long!

No, but there will be alot of shedding and the dead hair getting tangled with the rest.

only because your hair hasnt been combed , so it doesnt cause breakage really.. just take proper care

I've herd that it can if it isn't done properly, the additional weight can cause thinning at the hair line... basically the hair can be pulled out from the root if it's too tight... it makes sence to me.. but i'm no expert

most defintely not, just make sure to properly wash and moisturize your hair underneath the weave. Also dont leave the weave in for insane amounts of time (from experience)
You will see clumps of hair coming out when you remove the hair, BUT like the ladies above me said its just normal shedding, itll seem like a lot but its just the accumulation of the time you had the weave in.
Happy growing!!

The tension from the braids under the hair extensions
has caused a little thinning of my hairline!

Look at my fotki and you can see what kind of growth can be achieved wearing a weave. I had dead broke off crooked hair and after wearing a weave for a year I had a thick healthy head of hair. You STILL have to take care of the hair underneath though and some don't. Don't let it stay in there forever before getting it tightened up, allowing it to hang. I put no relaxer in my hair either (haven't since) I let it go gray and did not color it.

I AM USING HAIR WEAVES AS A PROTECTIVE STYLE AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE IT BASICALLY PROTECTS MY NH AND ALLOWS IT TO GROW. THERE IS NO BREAKAGE.

From experience and also a braider, there are pros and cons. If your hair is in a weak state you shouldn't get braids because it will only put more pressure on your hair as in it will only weaken your hair more. Braids and weaves doesn't make your hair grow. You are just able to see the growth that your hair has maintained throughout the weeks/months you had it in. But putting your hair away with extensions can be the best way to achieve growth if your hair is in a good condition and you take care of it.
