Zendaya has backed out of her starring role in the Lifetime movie about late R&B singer Aaliyah.

The 17-year-old Disney Channel star is "no longer involved" in the project, a rep for the actress confirmed to the Daily News Sunday.

The news of her departure comes less than two weeks after it was first announced that Zendaya would portray the "Back and Forth" singer in the Lifetime biopic, tentatively titled "Aaliyah: Princess of R&B." Production was scheduled to begin this summer, and the network hoped for a fall release.

But complications, and a new search for the lead, might warrant a push-back for the film. There were also production issues surrounding the project, a source told E! News, citing problems acquiring rights to do Aaliyah's music.

The late singer's family has been vocal about their opposition to the idea of a small screen adaptation for Aaliyah's story - instead they want a feature film - and about their plans to block Lifetime from acquiring any rights to the songs.

"We want a major studio release along the lines of 'What's Love Got to Do with It,' the Tina Turner movie," Jomo Hankerson, Aaliyah's cousin and president of her label, Blackground Records, told the Daily News.

"This needs A-list actors, A-list talent that can breathe life into what we think is a phenomenal story."

I dont think that Aaliyah would want her life made into a small screen or big screen film since she treasured privacy. The whole project should be scrapped all together.

not really on topic, but i didnt know until recently that rkelly tricked andrea kelly into marriage the same way that he tricked aaliyah (said, oh we have to go up to the hotel room for something and a pastor & witness were there with a marriage cert for her to sign). all this time, i thought that andrea had a traditional proposal & wedding ceremony.

Tina turner? ...nah booboo

An aaliyah story that downplays or ignore her relationship with rkelly is not a movie worth watching.

Hmm. Not to be insensitive, but I don't think aaliyah's life warrants a big time movie. in my opinion, her premature death is the reason why her name is still relevant and idolized. she died at the peak of her career. many artists of her caliber have come and within time, have faded into what "was" hot. i just don't believe her music career would have withstood time had she still been alive.

i hope that zendaya girl didn't back out because of all the backlash. when the tlc cast first came out there was a lot of negative opinions. but they did a great job and shut people up. that's what she should have done.

Well this is unfortunate but zendaya had everything to lose if this ended up being a mess.

I agree. With her being a Disney alum, she needs to be only on projects that will maximize her fame and her $$$. Not projects that are shaky.
