There is a new documentary out [below] called "Afraid of the Dark" in which they investigate the fear surrounding black men among mainstream America. I can't help but wonder how much we, ourselves are to blame by perpetuating the gangster, thug imagery when it was conducive to selling records or a lifestyle.
Honestly, if you had no experiences in black culture beyond listening to the [mainstream] rap music, and watching the evening news along with TV shows like Cops and First 48, would you have a certain level of fear?
I know we mainly embraced the ostracism an used it to our advantage, however I wonder if we ourselves, bought too far into to it and took it too far only to be surprised at how we began to be perceived throughout the world.

The title alone feels like victim blaming.

Despite the totally legit rationale (serial killers, genocide, lynching, wars), I'm not afraid of white people.

Everyone can make that same leap of faith toward black men/people & judge them/us as individuals.

Na, this is directed to my fellow culture conscious BHM'ers, they know who they are.

Well that's just it, before hip-hop [gangster rap], to be specific, I think any preconceived notions were based on just plain ignorance, however I think after the emergence of gangster rap we lent credence to these ill-conceived notions.

Black crime is much more widely reported by the media. I lived in a town were officers would arrest a Black Man for public intoxication and honestly would give a drunken White Man a ride home.

Black Men have been wrongly accused for years and it continues while Yt's continue to play the mild mannered role and are guilty of white collar, serial killings, child abuse and many others.
And they know this, Look at Dexter.

Yes, I believe Black Men have added to the fear while the scales have been tilted heavily against them anyway.

I think that people have perpetuated negative stereotypes since the beginning of time. The difference is that in the past, it was a subculture where the bad stereotype was cool, but that subculture is now in the forefront.

America and the rest of the world have a perpetual hatred about our men, women and kids regardless. I'll admit, many of our people are wicked as hell and are very wise to do evil, especially towards each other.

But I ain't going to sit here and act like rap music, gun violence and so called "black masculinity" is the main reason why white folks treat us the way they do and that they are justified in feeling the way they do about us. These people hated us from day one. Ain't they the same ones that killed the Natives right after the Natives fed them and gave them top notch hospitalityErmm

You set people up to behave a certain way and when they behave in the matter, crackers get scared of the problem they created.
