Hello bhm, long time no see...again
Mad late on this thread but it's interesting though.
The following are based on MY own experiences, interpretation and maybe some projection idk.
I'm really beginning to HATE the black voice because I find it unnecessary and is many time obnoxious. The intent is to actually fool people and make them think you're white, not to simply sound intelligent. I always grew up with the notion that the "professional" black woman put on that "white voice" even moreso than men. I guess it's because men do more physical work stereotypically while women do more "office-y" type things. The men in my family seem to have no ability to "talk white" in any capacity..more on that later.
I expected not to be accepted by customers AT ALL using anything revealing my ethnicity. When I was new, I heard co-workers use their natural sounding voices and could not believe people were taking them seriously. It really threw me for a loop when I'm taken seriously and received just as well if not better when I'm more relaxed and sound black...if anything people point out my Southerness (usually positively) moreso than my race.
ETA: I guess it annoys me really when BLACK people who don't know the culture of my workplace scream at me to "TLK WHITER OR THEY GON FIRE YO BLACK HINDPARTS"...when I sound like myself.
On a slightly related note, I was always told my entire black American life that the world is out to get black people. The biggest burden in life is being black point blank (they don't say this outright of course but it seems heavily implied). You have to base your life around "black sucks" but you can't say it outright. God help your soul if you identify with any other group whether it be gender, economic standing, religion, interests or whatever.
hmm, I really thought my blackness would be an issue to everybody basically...I'm really finding out that it's not. Yes there race issues in the world but there's other things goin on too.
