What is the purpose of this brush? I see a lot of people using it in tutorials. Isn't it the worst thing to use as a natural? Isn't it like using a fine tooth comb??

To do the shingling effect, in which they brush the existing curls into uniformity with some kind of product.  Be it leave in conditioner, hair gel, hair custard, etc.

I use my brush to detangle In the shower, it does a fine job at getting rid if shed hair too. I use the D41 volumizing brush, it gets little praise but works do amazing. Had mine for at least 6 years, the one I see praised often is the D4 which usually has 9 rows and the bristles are close. I do not like that kind it rips out my hair!

The teeth aren't as close as a fine toothed comb, but since there are a few rows of teeth it can really help get those last tangles out without too much effort.
But as mentioned above it's also used to make the curls more uniform.

I liked denman brushes when my hair was short (>6inches).  It's not too great for longer lengths IMO
