i say get a crapload of patience, a full large spray bottle filled with water, and the most slippery condish you can get your hands on, and go to work in the smallest sections your temperament can manage lol been there, feel your pain. it just takes working through carefully. try using your fingers only so that you don't break hair. if your hair is matted, it's most likely got lots of knots, and a comb would merely break them off. try to salvage all that you can.

olive oil, conditioner and water mix has saved me when i thought i had to chop all of my hair off due to the tangles.

I use a basic detangler otherwise. You really just need to create "slip" and have mucho patience. I start with the back of my hair to the front and braid up any sections that have been successfully detangled.
