me to. i'm 23. at that time all the images coming in from haiti were bad. then you had the guy with the broom stick, and we were just starting to get over the whole aids thing. plus being raised around dominicans did not help my haitian self esteem |
That's honest. I was getting unnerved earlier because some of the same people that keep yacking about how the media does black america a disservice are spewing ignorant albeit benign crap themselves when it comes to haitians and don't understand what the big deal is. Anyways, most dominicans are completely screwed up anyways. Don,t forget we may be poor but WE ARE THE ONLY NATION THAT KICKED OUT MASSA. WE'RE THE REAL DJANGO | I could very easily take this as a shot at AA's But I'm very sure you know the dynamics are waaayyyyy different ...right?

Welp Jolie, what can I tell you, there are people who are embarrassed of their heritage from all walks of life. Haitians from that are not exempt. You will always meet the few who don't want to be. I however am surrounded by Haitians who love, embrace, and represent their ethnicity whenever they are given the chance to do so. I grew up around nothing but PROUD Haitians. Maybe it's time you switch your circle and help your family find their pride.

Glad to hear this. Truly. But I don't need to switch circles, though. It's something I notice with haitian americans, not here. Again, I know where it comes from but it's annoying nonetheless |
Well, I don't know what to tell you. As a Haitan+, who lives in NY full time, I run into nothing but Haitians with pride in their roots.*Kanye shrug*

How is that a shot??? I'm saying we're the only nation in the world to have had a successful slave revolt. It's historical fact. It doesn't mean I'm putting AA's down. How would you infer that from my statement?

Yeah, it was. I admit it. I have a personal dislike. But then I tend to dislike any blacks that are not proud of being black

I'm just saying if I were you I could take that as an implication that AAs somehow didn't do enough to end slavery.
But I'm sure you know the circumstances were different.

You're from dr? And I felt some sort of way about that too. Not all Dominicans are like that.

Except not all black Dominicans are like that . There's quite a number of Dominicans who embrace and love their blackness.

And you would be right to say that I know different. Anyone who knows anything about slavery knows what black people were up against, so what you're suggesting never crossed my mind. But it's ok for me to be proud about something this symbolic about my ethnicity in the same way you should be proud of Martin and Malcom. There's nothing wrong with that. But we are the real Django. If Tarantino were willing to make more than a revenge fantasy, he would have tackled the haitian revolution.
