Can someone tell me the benefits to using curl activator on natural hair? Why would I want to do this? How would it work on my (what I believe to be) 4a/4b hair?

Also, what activators would be good ones to buy if I decided to try this out?

Activators are the only thing that has worked for me.  I have been natural for about 2 months.  Try World of Curls.  It's great.  You need about a small handful.  Rub thru damp hair.  It will make your hair really soft and define the curl pattern.  You can get this product at any drugstore or beauty supply (about $7).  Also, a lot of people recommend S-Curl No Drip Spray for added moisture.

I agree w/yvettwi on the reason of using activators. I too have 4a/4b hair and I have never used curl activators on my hair; but I use Fantasia IC styling gel w/sparkalites and aloe vera on soaking wet hair. It really defines your curls and leaves hair soft.
HTH!
Peace and Blessings,

World of curls didn't do a thing for my hair.  I love Sta Sof Fro and Care Free Curl.

I second that IC Gel, it really does make your curls pop, I use it one wet/damp hair and comb through for popping action! Smooth N Shine Curl Activator gel is meant to be really good.

What do you guys moisturise with afterwards on a day to day basis, I'm scared to use S-Curl because all that glycerin might give me some fro action!

Hay hay,   I use S Curl for that very reason!  It make a very nice soft and full Afro. LOL

But I think that is due to the length of my hair, if your hair is shorter it may help more with a curl pattern.  I say this because at my roots I have a nice wave going on. Embarrassed

Hmm, I find that when I wear my hair in a bun anything water based helps with waves but I *think* the S-curl causes it to go puffy lol.

i found diluted sta-so-fro to be great. the extra water made it not feel so sticky. the reason activators work well is cause its glycerin and water based.
