The best thing to remember is that no matter how responsible you are or what benefits you gain from using them, credit cards and other debt are designed to enrich the bank, not you. When it comes down to it, the only reason people "need" "good credit" is so that they can enter into debt agreements that enrich others. That's it and that's all.

Go into it with a clear head. Only use your credit card if you already have the money in hand.Save for the things you need. Always pay it off in full every statement. Don't miss payments or make late payments.

^That's the plan.

I just got my first credit card last month through my bank (interest rate was lower than other places) and only plan to use it then pay off the full balance the next month. I've been paying my cell phone bill for 7 years so that helped build some credit.

Read all the responses, this is helping me learn about credit cards, cause honestly I haven't had my first Credit Card yet (I'm 20). All I've ever owned are debit/checking account. I'm supposed to get one soon, my mother was suggesting Macy's but I was telling her I heard store credit cards are the worst.
Maybe I should go with discover or American Express ?

I wouldn't do American Express for your first card. Lots of places have stopped excepting it.

This! I think a lot of people feel like credit cards are made to benefit them... Not the case! Be careful those who are just getting credit cards. Be smart and strategic and credit cards can be a huge help.

If you are going to get an AMEX apply for the AMex blue card - the one you pay over time.
Ive never had a discover card.  I dont know many people with them

My credit was the pits when I was just starting out on my own. I couldn't even get a phone in my name due to the dreaded mother who has her bills in her kids names......Anyway, fast forward many, many years later in 2008 I purchased a car from an actual dealership, with my big bro as a co-signer. I paid that car on time every month for 4 years, never missing a payment. I didn't apply for anything and made sure that anything I got, I could afford to pay for. I did get a capital 1 secured card and only made gas purchases with it. Last year, I decided I was ready for a new car, but sorta didn't want the hassle of what I went thru for the other car. On a whim, I visited the dealership near my house and walked out with a 2014 Mazda 6 - no money down! Its not a super fancy car, but its my first brand new car! That was in March of this year. I had no idea that my credit score had increased so much! Since that time I have scored 3 additional cards - Walmart, JCP, and Old Navy - all within 3 months of each other and I got my car refinanced after having it for only 2 months at 5.99% thru my bank and they gave me a signature loan for $1K!

I, too, and a member of the ficoforum and reading thru the pages has given me a great deal of insight. OP, they have the backdoor numbers to many of the CC companies and many people have had positive experiences after calling for an increase. I would start there.

And good luck to you.
