People are really pissed about this. I'd like to know what led up to this.

Days before due date, couple and unborn child gunned down in eastern New Orleans

Those close to Lionel Delpit III knew the 25-year-old's conversations were dominated by a single topic over the last several months. He and his 23-year-old girlfriend, Breon Stewart, were preparing to close out the year by welcoming the birth of a son: Lionel Delpit IV.

"He was so excited about being a dad," Delpit's cousin, Corey Rayford said. "All he talked about was the baby."

Outside their eastern New Orleans apartment Wednesday night (Dec. 16), the young couple sat together in his blue Chrysler PT Cruiser when, authorities believe, one or more gunmen opened fire.

When the shooting stopped, all three were dead

"I'm trying to get my head together," Rayford said. "I just don't know."

New Orleans police found the couple, the city's 150th and 151st homicide victims of 2015, shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday. Dozens of evidence markers surrounded the car, as detectives worked through the rain to investigate the shooting inside the Wind Run apartments, 12151 North Interstate 10 Service Road.

Cmdr. Doug Eckert, leader of the department's Criminal Investigations Division, said the couple appears to have been the intended target of the gunfire. Detectives are not sure whether there was more than one shooter, Eckert said, adding that investigators are chasing potential suspect leads.

"There is no good time for a homicide," he said. "But right before the holidays makes it worse."

Police classified the incident as a double homicide, and are waiting for an official autopsy report before deciding whether to add another charge in connection with the death of the couple's unborn child. His birth was due Dec. 29.

"It was senseless," said Kioke Johnson, a cousin of Stewart.

'They didn't just take her life'

Johnson was with other members of Stewart's family Thursday as they gathered at a 7th Ward home to absorb the news.

"They didn't just take (Stewart's) life, her child lost his life, too," she said.

Stewart and her twin sister, Brittnee Stewart, shared the pains and joy of pregnancy together. Brittnee Stewart gave birth to her daughter just last week, Johnson said. The whole family awaited with excitement for little Lionel's arrival.

"She feels like she lost part of her soul," Johnson said, asked how Brittnee is coping.

Johnson said those who knew Breon Stewart agreed: "There's nothing bad you could say about her."

Breon Stewart graduated in 2011 from George Washington Carver High School, where The Times-Picayune archives indicate she was the valedictorian. Again, she shared the experience with her twin: Brittnee Stewart was salutatorian the same year.

Breon Stewart worked in a clothing store while she attended college, Johnson said. She planned to graduate next year and become a nurse.

"She was a beautiful person. Smart, very stylish," Johnson said. "She had a lot going for herself as a young lady."

Delpit worked two jobs and was the little chief of the Black Feather Mardi Gras Indian tribe, which his father, Lionel Delpit Jr., and other family members started in the early 1990s. Rayford said his cousin was being groomed to become the tribe's chief after his father's death in 2011.

"He never had a chance to put on a suit and go out as active chief," said tribe member Stafford Agee of Delpit.

Johnson said she can't imagine why someone would want to kill her cousin.

"We just want the community to come together if they know anything," she said. "We just want justice.

Anyone with information about this shooting should contact Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.

Euric Cain accused of kidnapping, raping couple day after allegedly shooting Tulane medical student

Euric Cain, the man indicted in the shooting of Tulane medical student Peter Gold, was accused Wednesday (Dec. 9) of kidnapping and raping a couple that police said he carjacked less than 24 hours after shooting Gold.

Cain, 21, already is jailed on a $6 million bond after his Dec. 3 indictment for the shooting. Now NOPD investigators say video and DNA evidence links Cain to the couple's kidnapping and rape less the day after the shooting.

Cain was booked Wednesday with two counts of first-degree rape, two counts of second-degree kidnapping, two counts of armed robbery and two counts of carjacking in connection with the couple's attack, reported Nov. 21 at 3 a.m.

The victims in the two incidents are not connected other than by Cain being accused in the crimes.

In Gold's shooting, prosecutors said Cain was the man captured on video surveillance robbing and attempting to kidnap a woman around 4 a.m. Nov. 20 in the Lower Garden District. New Orleans police said Gold, 25, attempted to intervene in the crime and was shot in the stomach by Cain.

Cain has pleaded not guilty to the shooting. NOPD investigators said Cain is the man seen on a chilling video sequence shooting Gold in the midsection and then attempting three times to shoot Gold in the head, only to have his gun jam.

According to the new arrest documents, the second attack occurred when a male-female couple was entering a car parked near St. Philip and Henriette Delille streets in Treme early Nov. 21.

An armed man hopped into the back seat of their car and demanded the couple's cash and credit cards at gunpoint, the documents say. The suspect, who police said has been identified as Cain, ordered the woman to drive the car about four miles away to the parking lot of an abandoned school near Abundance and Press streets in the Desire neighborhood.

There, according to police, Cain ordered the couple into the back seat of the car. Cain raped the woman, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. The report said Cain then also forced the man to perform oral sex on him at gunpoint.

The documents said that when the assaults finished, Cain ordered the victims out of the car and threatened to kill them if they notified police. The report said Cain drove away in their car and the victims called police from a nearby store.

Cain was arrested two days later in connection to Gold's shooting, when authorities said they learned he had been driving and was in possession of the black Ford Focus stolen from the raped couple.

NOPD Sex Crimes Detective Keisha Ferdinand wrote in her request for an arrest warrant that police obtained video evidence showing Cain using one of the couple's stolen credit cards at a store. On Dec. 3, Ferdinand wrote, the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab returned a DNA match from ejaculate fluid left on the raped woman to an existing sample from Cain in the CODIS database.

NOPD chief Michael Harrison discusses arrest of Euric Cain NOPD chief Michael Harrison discusses the arrest of Euric Cain, the suspected shooter of Tulane medical student Peter Gold on Nov. 20, now accused of kidnapping, carjacking and raping a couple the next day.

On Tuesday, police confirmed with the victim that she did not know nor engage in consensual sexual acts with Cain, and the warrant was approved early Wednesday morning.

Nictoria Washington, described as Cain's 17-year-old girlfriend, was indicted last week on the allegation of being an accessory after the fact to attempted first-degree murder in Gold's shooting. Police said Washington harbored Cain at a home in the 2200 block of Delachaise Street, where he was arrested Nov. 23.

Washington is not mentioned in court documents as a party to the carjacking and rape allegations.

Cain's bond was increased by $1 million, to $7 million total, based on the new allegations.

Cain faces a mandatory life sentences if convicted of his charges. Washington faces a prison term of up to five years if found guilty.

In Marrero murder-suicide, 'picture perfect' family of 4 dead

Few imagined such a crime could happen -- a triple murder and suicide -- in a middle-class Marrero neighborhood so thick with law enforcement officers that residents call it Cop Land. It's the kind of place where everyone waves hello but no one gets in each other's business.

When family gathered outside the yellow crime-scene tape Sunday (Nov. 29) in the Oak Forest subdivision, they comforted the sobbing teenager who had returned from a hunting trip to find her mother and stepfather dead in their living room in the 4800 Brandi Street. What she hadn't seen, when she ran out to call 911, were her two half-brothers: In separate bedrooms, they, too, were dead.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said David Mata, 46, fatally stabbed his wife, Kelli Fabre Mata, 40, and their sons, Caden Mata, 4, and Liam Mata, 2, sometime before 11 a.m. It was not immediately certain how David Mata killed himself, but a Sheriff's Office spokesman, Col. John Fortunato, said a straight-blade knife was found under his body.

"I didn't think he would do something like that. He was such a good person," said a friend of Kelli Mata's 18-year-old daughter, who discovered the crime. "He was happy with her." The two friends are seniors at Fisher Middle-High School in Jean Lafitte; Kelli Mata had another daughter as well, the friend said.

Indeed, David Mata's Facebook page is filled with photos of him and his wife, arms around each other and smiling. Their towheaded sons pose proudly in superhero Halloween costumes.

Mata was from Spain, and the couple had been married since April 2012, according to his Facebook profile. The page speaks of the power of keeping God in one's heart.

JPSO updates on Marrero murder-suicide Nov. 29, 2015 -- triple-murder and suicide in Marrero.

The couple had rented the house for less than a year, property owner Jason Bordelon said. David Mata worked as a mechanic at a big car dealership on the east bank; his wife was a homemaker. They always paid their rent on time. "Picture-perfect family," Bordelon said.

However, 24th Judicial District Court records whisper at trouble in the past. In 2010, before the couple lived together, Mata pleaded guilty to assaulting Fabre. He was given a suspended sentence of one year in prison and fined $540.

Much earlier, in 2002, he pleaded guilty to possessing 1,000 anabolic steroid tablets after a sting operation at his Marrero home. He was placed on probation for three years

Fabre was charged in 2011 with writing a worthless check for $700 to Twelde's Lafitte Drugs. She pleaded not guilty and paid in full; the charge was dismissed.

Mata had been married before, and his divorce was acrimonious. His then-wife charged he had deserted her and was living with Kelli Fabre, according to court records. Mata said she forced him to move out and had escapades of her own. The divorce was denied in 2010 but granted in 2012.

"I just talked to him on Thanksgiving. I mean, he seemed like he was doing perfectly fine," said a 14-year-old neighbor who cut the Matas' grass. "They were fun. I never saw them argue, really," just minor disagreements. But "once you hear this, you've got to take that to a whole 'nother level."

As people rode by in golf carts, the youth added, "It's kind of hard to picture in this neighborhood." The Oak Forest Community Association scheduled a 5 p.m. prayer vigil.

Outside the Matas' low, brick-ranch house, the couple's vehicles, a black Ford Edge hatchback and a blue Ford F-150 pickup truck, were parked in the driveway. The front door lights were on. Inside the door, as the authorities rolled up the crime tape, a small backpack could be seen hanging on a peg, an even smaller pair of shoes on the floor.
